Are the drives seen in the machine BIOS?

What kind of hardware are we talking about here?

yes its seen in bios it functions perfectly. linux runs its beautifully. but somehow my n00b friend messed up the drivers for the optical drives within win xp. its purely a software issue.

Autorestore turned on? If so, just do a driver rollback to a time when it worked correctly.

If Autorestore isn't turned on, you could shut the machine down, remove the IDE cables for the optical drives, restart, let it come into Windows. Then, go into Devmgr, remove (uninstall) where the drives are listed in DevMgr (under "show hidden devices"), scan for hardware changes. Then, shutdown, reconnect the cables, and let Plug and Pray do its thing. Worth a shot.

Not a problem. Hope it gets it, if it doesn't, well, then, I'll have to put my thinking cap back on, and we'll see what rocks fall out of my brain. :)
