Old setup

root - 80GB Maxtor IDE
data - 160GB WD IDE
Windows XP Pro

New setup

root - 250GB Hitachi IDE
data - 160GB WD IDE
Windows XP Pro

In my new setup the partition makeup of the 160GB WD drive does not report in the Disk Management console. The drive reports as a drive with no partition makeup.

In the old setup the drive was partitioned as one 160GB partition. I have updated my drivers and installed service pack 2.

I can't figure out why the new XP install fails to recognize my WD drive makeup. Any ideas?

Is it the same motherboard?

Yes, it is the same motherboard. The only hardware that I changed was the root hard drive.

You need to run WD diagnostics on the drive and ensure it is still mechanically sound. If the tools report that the drive is still good to go, then post back and we'll troubleshoot some more. Also, it's not a dynamic disk by chance is it?

Check cabling/jumpers, does the BIOS see the drive?

The drive was set as basic in the old setup and is still in basic mode in the new setup.

I ran the western digital DLG software and it passed the quick test. the extended test takes hours so I did not run it.

I'm going to try inserting my old root drive to see if it can recognize the partition makeup of my 160GB drive.

Well, I am moving on to data recovery options now. I cannot force XP to read the hard drive makeup. I'm using GetDataBack for NTFS and its doing the job.
