i hope someone can help me. i noticed when i'm gaming online that i always seem a half step behind other players. what i mean is:
they run faster than me. they shoot quicker than me. they switch weapons faster than me. they reload faser than me. etc. this isn't skill related. it feels as if there is a slight delay.
this is really annoying. i always question people what equipment and connection they have. most people have rigs less powerful and their connection is usually slower. i am also close to the gaming server and my pings are really low (20's). i can't figure it out. i've tried different drivers and i've done all the speed test and tweaks for my connection to no avail. can anyone offer any suggestions.

tweak your settings for optimal performance
sounds like it could be graphical lag

When I play people significantly better than me in UT2k4, I feel that way too. It's not that they are actually faster, they just know how to jump and dodge more effectively.
Six things to look at:
1) Practice, practice, practice on your movement skills. You didn't say what games in particular you are referring to, but in UT2k4 learning to dodge, wall-dodge, dodge-jump, shield jump, and to a lesser extent double jump well is extremely important. All games have their own movement styles, learn them in and out.
2) Adjust your FOV. The lower your FOV, the slower it feels like you move, and the faster it looks like other people move. Too high of an FOV can throw off your aiming, and it also affects your mouse sensitivity (see below)
3) Mouse sensitivity. Low is better for aiming, but too low can make you feel like you're in slow motion when you turn. Play a single player level without bots and find an area with a wall and a fairly large open area by it. Pick a point on the wall, run away from it for a couple seconds, jump, and while in mid-air turn and fire a rocket (or similar) at the point you chose. You want to be able to turn fast enough to face that wall in midair, but slow enough that you can aim at that spot effectively. Practice this drill a lot and pick the fastest speed that allows you to still aim well enough to hit that spot 8 out of 10 times.
4) FPS lag. How is your framerate in the game? Turn down details until you get at a minimum, 40+ FPS in even the biggest firefights.
5) Ping lag. How is your connection? Various games have commands to display your ping while in-game. I can't stand to play at anything over 120, and 60 or lower is my preference. If your ping is higher than 120 or so, consider upgrading your internet connection.
6) Tweaking your config. If you're using the mousewheel to scroll through weapons, of course any good opponent will be more effective -- the better players use hotkeys for some, if not all, weapons. I have 5 buttons on my mouse for weapons in UT2k4 (BestWeapon, SuperWeapon, Rocket Launcher, Shock Rifle, Transocator) which makes it very easy to switch based on situation.

If you're playing CS or something like that make sure your rates are high enough.

And in CS, running with your knife out makes you faster.

i appreciate your responses. the game i play often is no one lives forever 2 multiplayer. i think it is still the best multiplayer out.
i don't suck as i am one of the best players in the game. it wasn't always like this. just the last few months.
i have enlisted other players to race me from point "A" to "B". i lose every time. when i ask them what rigs they have and their connection speeds, most times they are inferior to mine.
my pings are always in the low 20's. i am also very close to the servers (50 miles). at first i thought it was the online connection. my isp says otherwise.
it almost seems like i am shooting blanks. i have asked a player to stand still while i shoot him at point blank range. it will take me a whole clip at times to kill him. they then try on me and kill me in 2-3 shots.
during firefights it gets somewhat choppy. my fps range froms the 40's to the 200's. i've tried different video cards with out success.
one problem i can trace this back to was my northbridge fan was dead for who knows how long before i noticed it. i replaced the fan but i'm not sure if i damaged the nb? could o/c'ing have anything to do with it. temps seem fine.

You have a wireless mouse and or keyboard OR do you have a game controller hooked up also? And, have you defragged your hd lately?
What I would think might help as a test is if you could setup a lan game with another inferior machine and see if the problem persists in that setting. If it does, then it would be safe to assume that it is not online lag related.
Also, any other games that this happens in?

no wireless keyboard or mouse. i am using a logitech mx310 mouse and a microsoft multimedia keyboard.
i haven't played any other games. i guess i should do that. thanks for advice.

Have you tried reinstalling the game? Might be some obscure setting in your user.ini or elsewhere ... uninstall completely, including your user.ini, and reinstall/patch , see if that helps.

Did you turn into the fat kid? :D
Time to reformat and if that doesn't do it then I don't know what will.

maybe its overheating...check your fans, etc. does it happen always??? or after long play...if it comes down to it...wipe, reload....but first try reinstalling the game
got the latest drivers for everything?

Also, if you could play the game on an "inferior" machine to compare. That would be useful. I know that is not always an option though.
Have you swapped out keyboard/mouse to make sure you don't have bad ports? That's a real long shot there but I'm just trying to spew anything that comes to mind.

Try lowering your rez to 800x600 or 1024x768 max when playing online in FPS type environments.

i am one of the best players in the game.
prbly one of the few who still play that game lol...
but seriously, i would work with your rates and run some checks to make sure you aren't experiencing any packet loss.

i have tried all of the above suggestions without success. i thought it may be a heat issue. i have removed the side panel and the temps average between 45C - 55C. considering this is an abit board (i'll never buy another), actual temps are probably 10C lower. i am stumped. hell i would buy a brand new system if i knew that would solve it.

the game is actually growing again. we don't have the amount of players the new games have but we are a tight, well knit community. i like it just fine.
