View Full Version : So...Half-Life 2 does NOT work (P XXXVII)

I decided to go back and give Half-Life 2 another chance after letting it sit since the launch (I wasn't very impressed when I first played it, but I wanted to go at it again).
Long story short; the game freezes my entire computer whenever the main loading screen comes up. I've tried deleting the .blob file, but that never worked anyways (For me). I redownloaded the installation files and got the exact same problem. You'd think they could make a working game, but alas...
It isn't the hardware. I rotate through several games regularly and none of them have this problem, so it isn't something like the PSU or videocard.
Any suggestions?

Delete the whole Steam folder/uninstall everything and then load it back up. If nothing else works maybe that will.

Not impressed? Wow. You are hard to please. What don't you like about it??

I think you missed the point...he's not liking the fact it DOESNT WORK on his rig.
I had the same problem, and it ended up being I had an older pre-existing installation of the OpenAL EAX sound driver files. Uninstall any versions of OpenAL you have and reinstall HL2.

check www.steampowered.com forums for all the common troubleshooting. I had to defrag and move my page file to get HL2Dm to run without a memory could not be read error. Point is, everything has to be tip top in order on your rig to get the game going correctly.
