Need help with XP!

Was doing a tidy up, deleting old programs running reg cleaner, stopping some startup services in msconfig (quicktime) etc. Rebooted pc & logged in to find the taskbar had turned from normal blue to biege! Also msconfig appeared and found in startup everything was unchecked. Immediately tried system restore, but all my old restore point had gone. Checked services running and found they had all been disabled and couldn't be re-enabled.

I also restored the registry to an earlier copy using regcleaner - still no joy.

Next tried to do a system recovery using the xp upgrade disk. After 40minutes xp was up & i logged in.... to find the beige taskbar & all services disabled.....

Another odd thing, when i click to start a service in msconfig startup, once rebooted xp hangs just before logging in & i have to run the recovery disk to get it back.

My next option is to try uninstalling xp back to win 98 and reinstalling again, but before i do...

Any ideas??? What have i done to xp??

It appears one of your reg cleaners disabled all the services configurations.

services.msc is your friend, go set them all back to defaults.

ok, thanks, I shall give it a go later and see what happens.

(Last time I enabled them all - maybe that was my mistake, as it caused xp to hang!)

ok, need to use common sense!

looked on help & support on my other pc:

To enable or disable a service for a hardware profile
Open Services.
Right-click the service that you want to enable or disable, and then click Properties.
On the Log On tab, click the hardware profile that you want to configure.
Click Enable or Disable, and then click OK.

That'll be my next course of action!

System Restore?

To enable services run "services.msc", then right click the services, goto properties, change the startup type to "automatic". Do this for each service and reboot.

<SARCASM>Wait...wait....wait. Do you meant to tell me that disabling services can cause problems??!!???!!??</SARCASM>

The others have had good advice...I just wanted to point something out. You mentioned possibly rebuilding your box. Just so you know, you don't actually have to install 98 first. I'm assuming this means you have an XP Upgrade disc. You can boot off of that, and it will start the setup. At some point, it will prompt you for your 98 CD, verify it, and then continue on installing XP. Isn't real relevant at the time, but if you do need to rebuild, keep that in mind. Should save you some time too.

ok thanks for all the help. Using the recovery disk sorted out xp & the problem with the services not being able to re-enable. Services started up and everything working fine...

I'll chalk this one down to gaining experience!

WIll be upgrading the following components soon, i'm hoping that xp will detect everything ok and not have to use the recovery disk again:

p4 540j 3.2g processor
Abit AA8XE motherboard
Connect3d X800XL graphics card
1gb OCZ DDR2 533 memory
MaxtorDiamondmax 10 160gb HDD

Careful now. A certain forum member may jump in and try to discredit this most amazing revelation. He may also try to blame the problems on something other than the obvious.

But we shall never speak of "him" again. ;)
