i've tried 3 different HDDs still not install it..!!
my moms [abit kt7 with athlon1gig with 256mg ram] tried 2 of WD80gig, 1 of 80gig seagate. bios dectects HDD all the time
i've tried installing win98 and upgrading it..still doesn't work.
it just stops at "setup is starting windows" part.(blue screens with grey strips on the bottom and writing is on grey strips)
any ideas?
i've installed it before on other "newer" computers..never had this kinda problem.

Check the jumpers on the drives (don't use Cable Select...set them correctly). Check to make sure memory is seated correctly, and that all other data cables are inserted properly. Make sure your installation CD isn't scratched. You could also download Memtest, and give that a whirl too.

HDD jumpers seems to bo correct..but i dunno about the memory seatings tho..
i'll try to check on that after work..didn't thaught ram seating would matter but who knows
thanks

The machine POSTs and Boots, doubtful that is memory related, unless you are overclocked already. If you are, return to stock. If the problem persists, might end up being bad IDE cables. Just a couple of thoughts.

This good very well be a ram problem. At one point I was trying to install Xp and I had a bad stick of ram and it would get to about the same point you are talking about and then blue screen. What exactly does your screen say? If you have other ram lying around I would try putting that in and see if it helps.

That's really the only thing you can do to try and pinpoint the problem. It's a real pain, I have had to do it too many times. Hopefully it won't be the last stick of RAM you try if you are trying 10 :p

Good luck.

Download the ultimate boot CD or memtest 86 + (ultimate boot CD has this and much more, VERY handy tool).

Run memtest on the memory, at first test all the memory in the system for a couple of hours. Any errors = fail. If you fail, test one stick at a time. Failure doesn't always mean the RAM is bad, but it's likely. Good luck.
