Below is a scan from the latest PCGamer mag. It details how one of the luckyest guys on earth got to see a preview of Duke Nukem Forever. He actually got to play the game a little. It is scheduled for release in 2006 for the 10th aniversery of Duke Nukem 3D.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v293/nov14/duke.jpg

I had been waiting a long time for this game, then I just gave up all hope. This is great news for DN fans.

This may be the HL2 or D3 of 2006.

Why are they using the Unreal engine and not the D3 engine??????

Don't forget to zoom in at the bottomin of this jpeg to get a better view.

Isnt prey using the doom 3 engine? Why would they use the Unreal engine for Duke Nukem but use the Doom 3 for Prey?

I dont know what engine is better but I have heard that the Unreal 3 engine is extremly easy to right gameplay code for compared to other engines because the level designers can do it themselves. That could be the reason they choose it but Im not sure. Im kinda confused to be honest why not both games use the same engine. I havent read the issue yet maybee they explain it in there.

davidj
04-26-2005, 11:45 PM
In the 3rd paragraph of the article he states ..."and moved forward with our own rendering technology on top of Unreal."

Maybe I am reading this wrong, but to me they are saying that DNF is using a cuctom version if the Unreal game engine.

Just a hunch, the Doom 3 engine wasn't available when DNF development started. It wasn't even available in late 2002, when Broussard said everything was scrapped.

Prey is being done by a different team anyway.

Lets not forget the great wait for HL2. How many release dates did HL2 have even before the rip off. :( Quite a few. There were countless threads on this very forum saying that HL2 would never be released. Of cousre it is in the history books now :)

But the Unreal game engine

I guess that they will have low sys requirements that will allow more PC configurations to play DNF without a huge upgrade.

Michael.R
04-27-2005, 01:06 AM
Doesnt DNF catter towards the high end PC market though? I would think that the Sys requirments are going to be a bit higher then the average FPS released at the same time as it.

I think it's pretty obvious. This way in mid - late 2006 as every one's hopes are at there peaks they can announce they feel the UT200x engine looks dated and bland compared to more contemporary titles and scrap the game to start fresh a third time.

That way then can switch to Unreal 3 or something engine and announce DNF will be availible in 2008 or 2009, marking the 10th anversery of the announcement of Duke Nukem Forever.

HL2 did have some waits and delays, but nothing compared to DNF. This game has been delayed "Forever"

They gave ONE concrete release date for Sept 30th or whatever '03. Then they said spring '04 and released it in fall '04. Not really a huge wait considering every major game tends to get pushed back at least a year past its original projected release date.

do people realy anticipate this game.... realy just for the sake of a sequal or what...

If it's just a nomral FPS run and gun sequal then I'm not so enthusiastic but if some new gameplay is added then I'm excited...

on a side note I loved all the duke nukem side scrollers back in the day man my 386 sx 25mhz and 4mb ram was all I needed back then to have fun.....

When was the original release date for the game? 1999 right?

The problem with this game is that in my 20's I though Duke kicked ass. Now in my 30's, I've grown up a little, and expect a more sophisticated experience than a few one liners and a virtual lap dance. I would have preferred a couple of 8 out of 10 Duke games in the meantime, instead of them taking Forever™ trying for a 11 out of 10 game.

The target market has grown up. George will have to find a new market for this game to suceed.

Prediction:
Whenever this game is released it will be semi-good with many of the current bells and whistles, but not worth the 10 years (+ ?) of buildup and will just be a blip on everyone's gaming radar for a few weeks. George Broussard will never get the returns on the investment and will never make another video game.

Have they changed engines again, then? I just remember the original switch from Quake2 (I think it was) to Unreal.

They upgraded from UE to UE2 during the course of development. It wasn't a massive leap, but just the gradual application of code snippets and patches from Epic.

Personally, I'm glad it's some form of Unreal. The first was a pig, but UE2 is pretty nice and scalable.

Wrong, most games don't get delayed, and if they do its not for a year! This is why many games suck, b/c they don't delay it enough. Taking that logic DNF should be better than HL2. We'll see.

I have little doubt because this was not some DNF announcement, but was actually verified by another party that actually played the game. Plus, why fib about DNF just to take some attention away from PREY??? But just in case, I'm not holding my breath either :D

I bet that they are literally banking own the nostalgic popularity of DN. I think that they are partially right. Some will buy the game (like me) due to the huge popularity of the original, unless the pre release web reviews suck.

This rates up there with Team Fortress 2 with me. It was announced ages ago as well but Sierra still has screen shots on it's site. It's just going to take some waiting on our part. :(

My main concern is not the gfx of DNF, I just hope they give us great SP & MP gameplay. I hope that they have learned from D3's mistake. More focus on the gameplay, fun, the characters and game content & less focus on gfx. IMHO

Well whenever this game comes out, it should be one hell of a game.

That's what I've always thought. The irony is too great. I also like how PC Gamer says "...it's still to early and rough for 3d Realms to unveil the game..." Yes, of course, too early. It's only been in development for a decade. Don't rush them.

No matter what is said, the Duke is an all time classic. If you were to list the top 10 classics, imo DN would be on that list with HL1, TF, UT2003, Quake3 Arena, etc...

When this game nears it's release date, the gaming community will just go nuts. It will be interesting to see the once-doubters posting their comments about this game. :)
