I've searched a lot and got PART of the answer.

I have a brand new system, blank Seagate 300GB drive, WinXP Pro CD-ROM.
From reading, I believe I can do this:

* Insert the WinXP Pro CD-ROM.
* Create a small partition C: (10 GB).
* Install WinXP Pro on the 10GB C: partition.
* Upgrade WinXP to SP1.

Now for my QUESTION: can I stretch the C: boot partition, or is my only alternative to create a new 290GB D: partition?

(I prefer to use freeware: my WinXP or Seagate CDs or some free tool.)

I'm not sure of any freeware available that can do it, but what you want is a dynamic disc partitioner (like Partition Magic).

If you have access to a different system, you can slipstream SP2 into the XP disc and create a new disc. Booting from the slipstreamed disc should show the entire disk. (Disclaimer: I have not tried this a 300GB myself yet.)

Thanks, guys. I'll see if a friend has Partition Magic.

And I do have access to a second system, so I'll have to read up on what "slipstream SP2 into the XP disc" means. I'd love to get a single 300GB C: boot partition.

Use this: http://nuhi.msfn.org/nlite.html . Totally automates the slipstream process, and lets you change a bunch of other stuff too.
