Howdy. Well, the first time I installed SP 2 on my Windows XP home setup, it worked beautifully and without a hitch. Well, I recently reformatted, and after a while of stress, got it all back to normal. This time, though, when I tried to install service pack 2, I ended up having to reformat AGAIN. I put in the disc, all went well, all the files copied, etc....then came the time where it had to restart my computer....on the boot screen, the little status bars at the bottom would stop moving after about one "rotation" and the computer would hang.....I want service pack 2 back, as it has a built in firewall and such, but I don't want to have to reformat AGAIN...and yes, I even tried booting into safe mode, didn't work, just would hang. What should I do? Am I safe with SP1? I have spybot, Adaware, MS Antispy, and NAV 2005, so I'm protected fairly well....but I don't wanna take any chances.....both ways. I don't want to try to install SP2 again and have to reformat, but I don't wanna let any "bad things" into my computer. What should I do? Is anyone else using SP1 and running fine? Thanks a lot. :)

Just slipstream SP2 onto your XP install disc and be done with it. If that's not sufficient, search for the other "is no SP2 a good idea" threads, as this has been beaten to death several times over.

Autostreamer will let you make a CD very easily with SP2 slipstreamed. And as Iomn75 said, it's been beaten to death.

Yeah, I get that its been beaten to death, I'm not going to reinstall windows again this soon...just don't feel like it....but can my question simply be answered? The time is taken from you to type "this subject has been beaten to death" rather than just say "its alright to have it" or "its not alright to have it"....c'mon now.

Versus the time taken for you to search "SP1 SP2" for the OS forum and decide for yourself? c'mon now.

Rediscussion only provokes more arguments. Many people say SP2 should be considered mandatory. Several people say you can still get by fine on SP1. Some people still think SP2 is somehow counterproductive. The first two are both viable, at least. It's very easy to find which camp I'm in, provided you follow the posted advice, but I'll keep it unstated here in hopes of preventing another round of nonsense.
