My new 2001FP just showed up on my doorstep this afternoon. I'm excited to finally have it, but I'm finding that it's going to take some getting used to, compared to my 7 year old 21" CRT (Which was great, but becoming noticably dimmer with each passing month).

I'm trying desperately to get this thing configured, but it seems like no matter what I do, I'm unable to turn off the "Retina Scorch" feature. Mine also seemed to have a severe red push, which I think I was able to neutralize with the panel settings.

My video card currently is an R9700 Pro, and I've been fiddling with the ATI control panel to try and tone down brightness and contrast. I've gotten it to the point where it no longer burns to look at it for a long period of time, but I'm still lacking any sort of depth in dark images. I'm a gamer primarily, so I'd love to find a way to get rid of this washed out haze that is currently covering all of my game images. I realize of course that I'll never get the black levels of a CRT, but I know there's got to be some improvements I can make.

If anyone is able to post helpful advice, or settings that you've used for your own monitors/video cards, I'd really appreciate it. Also, is there 'calibration' software I should be using to do this?

Thanks in advance for your assistance.

What are your monitors red/green/blue settings at (hardware, not software)? Try changing your software brightness/contrast back to default or to optimal settings to get rid of the haze, then take each red/green/blue setting down 5-20 levels. Adjust the brightness on the monitor as well (again hardware, not software) a little bit, although the entire 0-100 spectrum doesn't equate to a big difference.
I like my monitor at "normal" color settings during the day, and then switch to "custom" at night (where red/green/blue are all set very low). The best solution for you would actually be to re-evaluate the lighting in your room if at all possible. Usually its not something someone thinks about but if you can optimize your ambient lighting, really it often seems to upgrade life in general, not just your computer usage. However corny that may sound. The more well lit your room is, the less intense and more clear your monitor will appear.

But at night, I agree. The 2001FP is too bright at default settings.

That's an interesting point about ambient room light, as the room is very poorly lit. While I consider different lighting options for the room, I'll play around with the settings as you suggested.

Additional suggestions are welcome.

I'll probably have to do this all over again soon, as I discovered a few stuck subpixels on my monitor in very noticable places. Hopefully Dell will be willing to hook me up with a replacement. At least if I get the monitor setup nicely now I can take note of the settings for future reference.

use the video card drivers to setup color, brightness/cont./gamma. you can also save different configs with much fine controls.

I had the same problem. The first thing I did is set the color to 40/40/40 RBG and set brightness to 0, and gradually moved it up. I had serious headaches and eyestrain for about a week, and then got used to it. Now, about six months later, no problems. I love the panel! :D (BTW I have my brightness at 100 now except at night with no lights on)

I know about the scorch feature......which is why I returned it. I fiddled with settings all the time....if you turn down the gamma too low in the OS settings you compromise the color. Good luck!

Did you guys apply an icc profile? When I applied the 2001fp one downloaded from the dell site, the colours seemed very washed out.
