I have windows xp pro on both my laptop and desktop, however I would like to set up a shared folder on my desktop ,so I can access it on my notebook however, I don't want anybody else on my local network to be able to access it. I have be playing around with the sharing premissions but not matter how I set them I can never connect with my laptop to the folder with I use permissions. I always get the "can not connect you must not have the correct permissions" or to that effect .. is their anyway I can setup them up so that is could ask for a login and password or something like that?

Answered every week without fail, it seems.

Turn off simple file sharing on the "fileserver" box.
Create a user on each machine that you will use to access the box that has all of your shared files on. This user must be identical in the username and password aspect on EACH machine.
Share your folders with the permissions that you would like using the "main" user.
Log into each machine and check.

you can also do what was mentioned above, but instead of the users on client machines you can just map the drive

i find it much easier, but if anyone has access to the client machines than this option is not as good
