So I have a HP zv5420us (http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/product?product=420361&lc=en&cc=us&dlc=en&submit.y=8&submit.x=6&lang=en&cc=us) and want to use this for Linux only but think I made a big mistake with HP. I have tried the following distros on it...
FC2
FC3
Slackware 10.1
For some reason when the lid is closed and the laptop would normally go to hibernate or suspend mode, Linux just crashes on most of them. FC3 was the longest running distro but eventually gave in to this problem with locking up/freezing when the lid was closed.
Can someone tell me what is a good distro to use for a notebook that will not freak out when the lid is shut or maybe how this can be preveneted on any of the above distros? Right now I still have Slack 10.1 installed but I can not even log off I think with out it crashing. :(

Did you have to disable this via Ubuntu or has Ubuntu worked out the box for you? If so, how did you disable this?
Thanks

I tried downloading SUSE 9.2 from www.suse.com but I was getting 1kbps  so I gave up from their FTP site and was wondering if there is a better place to look?
Thanks everyone.

Sorry, I don't know how to use torrent files. I think I would need some type of client for bit torrent which I don't have :(

It is very, very easy.
Read this FAQ (http://dessent.net/btfaq/) or do some googling.
SuSE 9.2 installed fine on my Dell, but for some reason speedstep won't work and suspend to RAM causes the current ATI driver to lock up when resumed. IOW, there's major problems with laptop ACPI... but that isn't a surprise. :p
I'll try again with SuSE 9.3 in a couple of months.

The default kernel in most distros is compiled with ACPI support off. I've had varying degrees of success with laptops when using a recompiled kernel.
I'm using an ACPI kernel. It's a moot point anyways. SuSE self-destructed after several upgrades and i'm going to reinstall on my new laptop after 9.3 comes out.

I am trying to find a site that has SUSE 9.2 ISO files available for download. I went to SUSE.com and their site is as bad as Microsoft's. Way too much clutter and almost every link leads me to a "buy or order now" page.
Can someone show me where I can download the latest version of SUSE to see if that plays well with my notebook?
Thank you.

Haha, I was about to post a link to the mirrors. The Texas College Station one seems to work the best. At least when I was downloading it/and continue to download RPMS. Though...it is the closest US server to me. Haha.
