I saw this on Anandtech forums here (http://forums.anandtech.com/messageview.aspx?catid=40&threadid=1241849):

The Skinny: Replace your Microsoft mouse (intellimouse, wireless, usb, ps2, whatever) for FREE. Note: ONLY on RETAIL (OEM will just be rejected)

*** YOU DO NOT NEED TO SUPPLY YOUR SALES RECEIPT, RETURN YOUR OLD MOUSE, OR PAY ANY SHIPPING CHARGES. ***

Note: Refer to the warranty or call the toll free number if you have any questions about Microsoft's policy. Below I'll outline the information given to me over the phone by a Microsoft Supplemental Parts rep.

If you call Microsoft Supplemental Parts (800-360-7561 toll free USA & Canada) they will give you a fax (716-447-7330). All you have to do is fax them the following:

1) To: Microsoft Supplemental Parts (<- rep said this was important)
2) your first & last name
3) address
4) telephone number
5) email address
6) photocopy of the bottom of your mouse, with a setting clear and light enough to show the Product ID information on the mouse.

I'm going to give it a try with my aging Intellimouse Explorer 3.0, having some double click issues... Also I think that you don't actually have to fax anything, just tell them you don't have a fax machine and they will take your info (so I hear).

I've sent my mouse back to MS because it broke. It took them 4 weeks trying to find my mouse that they recieved and they even confermed that they got it with my tracking #.
After fighting with them every other day for a month that they had it and they knew they had it but couldnt locate it they finally sent me a replacement that was the wrong one so they had to ship the right one and I had to send the wrong one back unopened. I was without a decent mouse for about 3 months. So beware that they are reallllllly slow and the customer service sucks.

My intellimouse optical stopped working back in the day and I just called up microsoft and read them the number on the bottom of the mouse and they sent a new one to me for free. I really wish people wouldn't abuse this service just to get free hardware.

This is interesting... I had my old Intellimouse (2.0?) stop responding to me, it wouldnt recognize being connected to the comp... I just let it collect dust on the shelf... that'd be awesome if they'd replace it.

I also have a Intellimouse 3.0 'special edition' but it has been working FLAWLESSLY for some time now, I love it... I still like my MX500 but the first Intellimouse was the best fitment for my hand. :s

shit I have this problem with my explorer (LOVE THE MOUSE WOULD TRADE IT FOR NOTHING) where the mouse wheel roatates when it wants....really sucks for FPS games like HL2 when all of a sudden your rocket luancher pops out in the middle of a fight then BAM gibblets all over the place LOL.

Good find!

I like MS for this...the only problem I see is the absolutely rampant abuse of the whole system. A good rule of thumb is that if you are going to use the mouse on another computer after you get the new one then it probably isn't really broken.

if its broken, go for it... i got my brother an intelimouse a couple years ago, after a while it double clicked, scanned it to microsoft and got a free one

I have the explorer 3.0 and even without the smooth scrolling on the 4.0, mine still does this. Especially when you need your gun out the most: (coming around a corner to kill a camper, then boom you jump and..... your mouse decides to change to your knife!!). Doesn't that piss me off.

Does anyone else have this problem with the 3.0?

I got free intellimice for almost 3 years with this trick. I just told them the wire went frayed at the base of the mouse, and 2 days later I had a new mouse at my doorstep. All they asked for was the serial number. Would of kept using the intellimouse but logitech converted me a while back.

Wasn't there a bit about this a few years ago on how MS gives every "customer" a free replacement, but only once. They track the productIDs and I suppose link them to the ones they send out. Not exactly sure on the details but I've heard of this before.

There's no really apparent designation of the version on the bottom of my mouse. Theres a serial with a barcode, the numbers 4701 printed on it and then 2 chineese/japaneese characters and 3902b008

mavalpha
03-20-2005, 04:22 PM
4701 refers to Week 47 of 2001, so I'm going to have to say your mouse is probably off warranty.

I, too, am waiting on a new Bluetooth desktop. I switched over to Logitech's MX after my Bluetooth receiver died, but this may breathe new life into my gaming PC, resurrecting it as an HTPC also. (MX700 mouse + BT keyboard = insane range, AND awesome response/reactivity. The MX keyboard has terrible range.)

How long is the warranty duration on an MS mouse? Mine was made 3701 but I bought it brand new from a retailer only 10 months ago. It died 2 months ago... Am I SOL?

It says above the barcode, "IntelliMouse Explorer" on my first gen one and says "IntelliMouse Explorer 3.0a" on my you guessed it 3.0a. =)

I sent my firstgen to the fax number it doesnt even have a datestamp on the bottom, I doubt I'll get anything, but it did bork on me before I bought the 3.0a which is stamped 2103.

Heh, Microsoft has been doing this for a long time now. I can't believe some of you are just finding out about it :p.

It sucks that it doesn't work with OEM though because i have an OEM Intelli 4.0 that i'll have to RMA back to Newegg if i want a replacement and Newegg will probably send me a refurb or somethin since i bought it last year.

You won't be able to get the "original" (the big blob otherwise known as the 1.0). I've found that, although I didn't expect to, I prefer the 3.0 shape, and that's what they'll give you as a replacement. The 1.0's die in one way and one way only: the wires in the cord break. Take it apart, remove the stupid plug the cord attaches by, chop the cord off a couple of inches OUTSIDE of the mouse, and solder the wires onto the mouse's PCB in the right order. Voila.

shit I have this problem with my explorer (LOVE THE MOUSE WOULD TRADE IT FOR NOTHING) where the mouse wheel roatates when it wants....really sucks for FPS games like HL2 when all of a sudden your rocket luancher pops out in the middle of a fight then BAM gibblets all over the place LOL.

Good find!

I was thinking of posting a picture, but here's the deal with this. The wheel is stupidly placed inside the mouse and sticks due to a really dumb manufacturing oversight: The PCBs inside the mouse are made as segments of larger boards, and they have stupid little perforated bits that break so they get a bunch of little boards. The problem is that some moron didn't think about this, drew a straight line in their CAD program, and figured the wheel would clear the board. There are 3 little "tabs" sticking out of the centre of the front edge of the main PCB inside the mouse, and the wheel has enough play to move back and snag on them, which screws up how far it moves. Also, clean out the part of the wheel's axle responsible for that "clicky" feeling, and put a TINY bit of lube on all of the axle contact points (the "clicking" detente, located under the axle, and the 3 seats in which it rotates) while you're at it. Should be good as new. Just did mine.

Ok, so Lord of Shadows got a 4.0 Explorer as a replacement for his 1.0. Does this mean that if I request a replacement for my 3.0, I will get a 4.0? This makes sense because Microsoft only makes the 4.0 now, but is also a bummer because the 4.0's scroll wheel is useless in 3ds max and games.

I tried doing this with MS Australia, but I needed their warranty replacement line... I couldn't find it. I spent a few hours searching through microsoft.com for a support contact email. The person I got had good typing skills but he didn't understand English 100%... Given he had a foreign sounding name, looks like MS outsource their email support

It took me half a week of constant back-and-forth between him and me. He tried getting rid of me at every opportunity and provided false information (Like that my mouse was out of warranty, when it isn't until Jun 20th 2006). He wasn't terribly helpful and in the end I couldn't get it because I still didn't have the box my mouse came in. Even though I still had the receipt after all these years. I think they just try to use any excuse for not replacing it.

Long story short - if you're international you might have a little trouble with this one, but there's no harm in trying to wrangle with their tech support. Who told me to check that my mouse was plugged in properly and asked if I had gotten the laser dirty and/or ever cleaned or touched it. And wanted me to reboot, despite the fact we had been talking for numerous days and I don't know of many normal users who leave their computer on all the time.

I sent a fax over two weeks ago and didn't get any response. =\
I resent a fax yesterday explaining that I didn't get any reply.
-------------------------
I finally got a reply for the new fax. It seems they'll be shipping it :) . But in a month... :( .

I shouldn't have waited so long after they didn't reply for a week.

I got mine yesterday. they sent me a Wireless Intellimouse Explorer 2.0 for some reason. The lady even asked if I had a wired/wireless. It's just not the same as my InEx 3.0 (a little heavy, and wheel is not very smooth neither is it easy to click) but I'll live with it. Getting stuff for free is always great.

Argh, I really hate this mouse. I decided on just getting a new Explorer 3.0 from ebay, ordering two so that I don't deal with another mouse again.

I think what really killed the mouse is the stiff wheel. Its hard to spin it and the stress from using it makes my wrist sore. I'm not sure about Logitech mice, but I just wanted to stick to what I'm used to.

i am not going to read all of this.. but... i put some resolve carpet cleaner on my mousepad once cause i was cleaning a couch with it and looked at my mouse pad and though "damn that thing is dirty".... but once i put my mouse on that pad.. it died.. it was one of those first ms scroll mice that was not symetrically shaped.. it is in MD though, i am in FL... i still have it though cause i am a packrat... i might have to try that the next time i am up there though.. but i did kill it with carpet claener?? i still have no idea why that happened...

Just got mine today as well, same mouse, clicks sound different and the scroll wheel is stiffer, but that'll probably change soon enough.

Free stuff = very good.

I didnt call anyone or send a receipt, I just faxed all my info to that number like it says on the first page.

I just checked my email this morning and they sent me a "they recieved it email" then a "heres tracking number email" and finally a "it shipped email". Too bad I hadnt checked my mail before it arrived. =P
Does anyone know if there's an email address that can be used rather than a fax number?

please dont abuse this. i've had mice go legitimately wrong and through this process got them replaced. I'd hate to see MS change their replacement policy just because a bbunch of jerks want to make money or steal. I hate MS as much as anyone here, but their customer service is Top Notch. this reminds me of CUSA's TAP warrenty program and how they changed it recently because too many people were essentially stealing.

Please, think of the children.

My old Intellimouse 3.0 conked out on me. Did this, no emails, but got a new mouse super fast...like in 2 weeks. They sent me a 4.0 version and it works great!

I did have to call them, scan my old mouse and fax it to them, but that was a breeze. Good stuff.

I got my intellimouse 3.0 replaced for free, no receipt needed. Was still in warrenty. Afterwords, when I realized how crappy the 4.0 is compared to the 3.0, I opened both up (After scanning the 4.0 first) and just swapped the broken wire from the 3.0 for the wire in the 4.0. Now I have my old mouse working again.

Problem is though, they refuse to exchange my Wheelmouse Optical without the original receipt. The thing came with a 5 year warrenty damn it. How do they really expect people to keep a receipt for 4 or more years.

they dont lol, thats how they make money, and how they get their customers. I know that my family has a filing cabinet only meant for receipts. garage door openers, blenders, toasters, vacuum cleaners, etc.

For the Record, Microsoft no longer makes a Trackball, so they will not replace my Trackball for me :( However, if I still had the reciept, I could have gotten my money back.

"Found" my receipt for my trackball. Called in, was given a different fax number to fax the receipt, and then I got a call from the refunds lady saying to send the mouse in with delivery confirmation/tracking. They will refund me up to 7 dollars for the shipping then send me a check. Then I will go buy a nice MS bluetooth mouse on ebay or something.

Ohh, and this happened like 3 weeks ago and I have yet to send it out. Call me lazy.

-MS, shit for software, but great hardware.
