hi i am looking to build a nice new server for my bed room and i am looking to see what you guys think of fan less power supplys or water cooled ones. i would like to get something rated at least 500watts or higher becaue of the amount of hds i am going to be running

as far as I know your out of luck
there arent any 500 watt fanless supplies

top of the line would be Antec Phantom 350Watt

most water cooled supplies arent designed as water cooled
but rather retro fitted

what is the planned config?

well it is going to run as a data server right next to my bed so it has to be real quite what about powersupplys with fans is there any super quite ones that would work. as of right now here is the specs
3200+
gig of ddr 2700
9800 pro 128meg
80 gig hd
250gig hd
300 gig hd
(poss another 80 gig hd)
with an antec server case the ones that look like chef tec cases

if its just gonna be a data server.. it doesnt need that much umph... you could easily cut down the specs a LOT (like, passivly cooled p3) and have a really quiet system. it would still do fine too, there is no reason to have an a64 (or aXP) and a 9800Pro in a server.

that Antec 350 has enough amps on the +12V rails to do that ;)

There is a new phantom coming out that while isn't fanless......it should be quiet. It is a 500w model IIRC.

yea i may look in to that but in the mean time what do you guys think of this clicky (http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=17-103-473&depa=0)

If you want quiet and powerful you want a seasonic super tornado.....and no the name doesn't fit the product.

I think your confusing total watts with amps on the right rails
that Antec Phantom has more amps where you need them than that Vantec does

the new Seasonic is a damn nice supply
and its been reviewed by a "real" reviewer

this is rather interesting as I've been following the Antec Phantom 350 as I'm very interested in it. Anybody have any experience/input/references?

hey Ice Czar what do you think of the SeaSonic S12 430 Watt Power Supply

Ice Czar
03-11-2005, 08:59 PM
see Mike Chin's review above

its a unique supply in that most all the backward compatibity
(monster amps on the +3.3\5V rails) have been cut and its running 30A on dual +12V rails

it will still greatly benefit from a cool airstream
as will any fanless
basically fanless supplies have historically not lasted half as long as a faned supply
like any device the Arrhenius Equation (http://www.shodor.org/UNChem/advanced/kin/arrhenius.html#ggviewer-offsite-nav-12464512) applies
basically that as a rule of thumb
Each 10°C (18°F) temperature rise reduces component life by 50%
Conversely, each 10°C (18°F) temperature reduction increases component life by 100%.

who puts data servers next to their bed

banish it to a basement, or a closet or something...

or is this just a real rig filled up with a couple hds (most likely for illegal or disgusting things) masquerading as a "server"? :o
