I just stumbled across this....
PCI-E x8 or PCI-X 133
4, 8, 12, or 16 SATA-II ports
OCE, online level migration (downward only), optional battery backup, etc
http://areca.us/PCIXE.htm (displays funny in FF, ok in IE).
8 Ports, 500GB drives in RAID-6 is still 3TB of storage and really good protection from hardware failures. The only downside is you cant go from RAID 5 to 6, so that means you need 4 drives to start, and then its only using half of its raw capacity. It would be nice to be able to add a drive, and just migrate from 5 to 6 instead of expanding capacity. That and you need to find a board with an 8x PCI-E slot (those hella cheap Dell 420SCs have an 8x slot, but I dont know if its exclusively for graphics or not, or if thats even an issue).
