View Full Version : Ou t of the loop. Which HD is the best for gaming now?

I would like to buy a new SATA hard drive. Which one is the best or in the top 3. Lets say over 160GB

Well, best performance would obviously be Raptor, right? As for over 160Gigs AND performance, I have no idea. You may be better off with two drives, one for speed (OS and game files) and one for storage (anime, pr0n, whatever).

Definitely Raptor or 15,000 RPM SCSI RAID (:D) for performance.

Well i am looking for a SATA drive. Forget the size that i mentioned. I want the best Drive available. This new PC will only be for gaming.

Then a Raptor (http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=22-144-160&depa=0) it is. The speed is supposed to be awesome, but I'm still frantically saving up for one so don't take my word for it. ;) I'm not a hard drive guru either, so you might want to wait for other's advice. But the Raptor is the fastest SATA drive I've heard of.

If you get a raptor, get the 74 gig variant, it performs MUCH better than the 36 gig first gens. Though rumour has it that some new 36's have been upgraded to match teh 74 in performance I would still just get the 74,

If you want over 160gb you can go 174gb SCSI.
Slight price increase, though...heh.

What is the difference between the RETAIL RAPTOR and the OEM RAPTOR. What do I need to make it work.

Also, can I add additional raptors onto my system. I am planning on having a A8N? Can I build the RADI array in the future?

retail comes in a nice shiny happy box, maybe with cables, not sure, never buy retail boxes. OEM is a white box, or just lots of bubble wrap and an anti static bag., nothing special. They perform the same.


If you do raid 0 you'll have to start your install over from scratch, raid 1 might allow you to build since it's just putting the data on both drives, you'll probably have to read a bit more about the motherboard and it's controller to be really able to tell.
