the other day i found an old 20 gig in a box in my closet its not too old. i think it was out of a compaq......any ways, its a bit too slow for my liking, but i need the space...anything i can do to speed it up???

Throw it out the window of your car while going 80mph?
As long as you have all the right drivers etc. installed for your MB, and the drive is defragged etc. than no there is nothing you can do to the drive to speed it up.

maybe the way i formatted it or partitioned it?

Well if you use Partition Magic to put a smaller partition on the outside tracks of the drive it will be slightly faster than the inside tracks, but not by much.
If you set the sector size when formatting to huge numbers you might increase performance, but you will loose space. (because the smallest file size will = one sector size)
but in all reality, no you can't do anything much to speed up a drive.. unlike the CPU/RAM they can't be overclocked.
