Is there any difference/advantage to formatting a drive IN windows, or in DOS? It might be only in the way you see it, but I always "felt" better formatting from a dos command prompt and wiping it clean, than right clicking the drive in windows and selecting "format".

No real difference. If you really want you can always find a good software package to do it but I don't see the point.

One time I tried to formatted the hdd from windows and it did not allowed me to do so. Now, What kind of hdd you have? because you can get a formatting program to do so and also can test your drive for any errors. At least my Maxtor, you can go to the Maxtor website and download the program for free. You should check with your hdd's company to see if they offer something like this.
