i try to install my new brother mfc-210c printer, and the install fails every time i let the driver install do its thing. so, i try to manually install it by going through the "printers" panel and clicking "add printer", then i get the following error message:

"Printer operation cannot continue due to lack of resources. The print subsystem is unavailable."

how do i reenable the print subsystem so i can install my new printer?

Did you, by any chance, disable a bunch of system services?

Well, Print Spooler specifically.

i haven't had a printer since i set this machine up almost 4 years ago, so i had disabled a couple of services at that time... however, i did turn all of those services back on, including print spooler. a reboot did not solve my problems.

edit: but 6 reboots later, the printer works:confused: now i have a new problem, but its likely bios related. although i don't have my machine set up to check usb drives on bootup (this printer has slots for sd, memory stick, xd, and cf cards), it tries to read from it anyway, but since it finds no data, it doesn't check my hard drives. annoying as hell, but the solution is to turn off the printer before i start the computer, and everything is fine... i can live with that.

thank you for your help, everyone! yeah, even grjr (mr. postcount++)
