has anyone ever had files disappear without a trace from there computer? i had a folder on my desktop with about a hundred megs of pictures in it yesterday. today i go to save a new one to it and the folder is gone. 2 different file recovery programs cant find a trace of it.
i just love windows
i've searched thouroughly for both folder headings and filenames; nothing.
ran chkdsk, re-searched, and re-ran undelete program.
i found local history enteries, but nothing else.
any ideas, and has this happened to anyone before?

New one on me, possibly a failing hard drive?

a failing hardrive would cause file corruption, but for a folder to just disapeaar, with all that stuff in it ? unlikely, it would have to wipe all the allocation tables, which would make the OS unusable
the most likely causes:
(1) OP is crazy and deleted them without remembering (its a joke!)
(2) someone else has some sort of access to your puter
(3) virus or something, but unlikely

Maybe it corrupted the part that says it exists ;).

No. The File allocation sectors are duplicated in many places throughout the hardrive. For all those specifc sectors to be corrupted, and only one folder gone...and the OS still work? Impossible.

Maybe a wizard did it then... :D

I'm going with it was deleted or moved as well.

Agreed, I have never seen a file simply "disappear."

why wouldnt it show up in searches and undelete methods?
does anyone have a better, simpler to use file recovery program?

1) delete file
2) empty or remove file from recycle bin
no evidence
you can try a recovery program, see what it can find.

you were pefectly clear. you seem to think that "windows sucks" because someone deleted your files. try some OTHER recovery programs. I dont have a list. better yet, try a sector editor and examine the FAT sectors.
or contiune being an ass, and get no help.

Sorry to butt in, but he did say try deleting another set of files, and check with recovery software to see if the same thing happens.

Since he doesn't think someone deleted his files, I'm going to go with....
He is using the wrong computer.

I'll take C for 1000 Alex.

i think you're letting that little title under your screen name get to your head. i have not cocked an attitude.
regardless of how they disappeared, i'm more concerned with trying to recover them.
at no point did i say someone's advice was bad.
let me spell it out for you:
files are gone
want to recover
have tried some random file recovery programs that havent turned up anything.
and the question
does anyone know of software that works well for recovering files?

If you've tried several, and haven't been able to recover them, then chances are, they're gone for good. I'd suggest you figure out how they were deleted, instead of blaming Windows....and drop the attitude if your in need of help.
I'm saying this not because of my title or postcount, but because I can read, and have read your replies.

I think
you are being cocky.
I also think
if you actually
had the files there
and data recovery software
doesn't detect it
your beyond our help.
Several people have already
said this. My post count
is also irrelevant.
