I have been doing alot of troubleshooting trying to get some more info on this weird error I have been getting. Its pretty random, can happen on any page. It is the "we appoligize for the bla bla, but this program needed to shutdown"

I have been on MS's knowledge base and it has shown that SP2 should of took care of this problem. I have the newest version of mshtml.dll (6.0.2900.2604). All the info i find is for older version of windows, or windows xp SP1. Nothing on this problem with the newest version.

Just trying to get some more info....let me know if you have had this problem.

Well, i did hear firefox is awesome to use, but im a IE fan....so swapping browsers right now is out of the question. So with that being said....anyone have a idea what I would be missing?

I found this (http://windowsxp.mvps.org/IEFIX.htm) while doing some browsing. It doesn't mention your problem in particular, but it looks to do a replace and re-registration of the core IE files.

Why not just try firefox and see if the problem happens again? :). Trust me man, you'll be glad you switched.

I use AdwareSE and Norton antivirus. This is a fresh install of windows since i built a new machine.

This only been happening since i went from a Barton to a Winchester setup. I have swapped boards and this problem still happened on both installs of windows.

I tried that iFix just a few mins ago, it ran through its thing and browsing now....now it just wait time to see if IE crashes.

The only other thing I've found suggest reinstalling all of SP2... It's part of the following KB article from MS: http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=318378 (toward the bottom of the page)

Bumpage for some helpage =)

Thank you for choosing Online Support for your Microsoft Technical Support offering. My name is Harry and I will be assisting you with this service request. For your reference, the Case ID of this service request is XXXXXXXXXXXXXX. You can contact me directly by writing an email to XXXXXX@mssupp
ort.microsoft.com with the case ID in the subject line.
In your case log, you've indicated that the Windows XP operating system randomly displays the error message "Internet Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience" and the window closes while you are using IE. This situation happens in two different mach
ines with different installations of Windows. We shall be working to resolve this specific issue through the course of the case. If I have misunderstood your concern, please let me know.

This issue can be caused by some third party extensions or spyware automatically downloaded by the same web site you browsed on both of the computers. I recommend you perform the following steps to solve this problem.

Step1: Reset IE settings:
=======================
1. Click Start click Control Panel, select "Switch to Classic View".
2. Double-click Internet Options.
3. In General tab, click Delete Cookies, Delete Files.
4. Click "Settings", and then click "View Files". Delete all files in this folder.
5. In the Settings window, click "View Objects". Delete all the objects in this folder. If some objects cannot be deleted, please restart the computer and try again.
6. Click Advanced tab, click Restore Defaults icon and clear the check on "Enable third-party browser extensions".
7. Click OK and restart the computer and test the problem

Please check if the problem still exists after the steps above have been tried. If the error messege shows up again, please go on to perform the next few steps.

Step2: Eliminate spyware:
================
1. Download and install Ad-Aware from the following page:
http://lavasoft.element5.com/support/download/
2. Click Start -> All Programs -> "Lavasoft Ad-aware SE Personal" -> "Ad-Aware SE Personal" to start Ad-Aware.
(Note: If there is a popup box asking whether or not check definition update, please click OK and click Connect. Click OK to download and install the latest definition, and then click Finish.)
3. Click the Start button in the Ad-Aware window, and then click Next to start the scan.
4. After the scan is finished, click Next, click the check boxes on the "Critical Objects" tab to select them, click Next, and the click OK to confirm the removal.
This will remove all found spyware objects. Restart your computer.

The third-party products discussed here are manufactured by vendors independent of Microsoft. So we make no warranty, implied or otherwise, regarding these products' performance or reliability. To properly address your issue and help you solve it in a prompt and efficient manner, we recommend that
you contact the manufacturer of the third-party product as they are best resource to address issues pertaining to their products.

Please check on both of the two computers to see if the problem still exists.

Please let me know the results at your earliest convenience. I appreciate your time and effort on this issue. If anything is unclear, please don't hesitate to let me know and I will be glad to help.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Best Regards,

XXXXXXXXXXXXXX

What are you system stats? I see the hardware in sig, what keyboard, mouse etc etc.

Im really starting to think it has something to do with my Mouse.....everytime i get the error, im scrolling down the page. I never get the error unless I scroll.

Now what would cause it if it were my mouse, im using a Razer Diamondback connected to my USB.

You know that irritates the hell out of me when someone says, "use firefox instead". That doesn't fix the problem folks. The bottom line is there is a problem and simply using a different program is not going to change the fact that there is a problem that needs fixing.

I'm curious to know if you're using any add-ons to IE, such as any toolbars or popup blockers. Post a Hijack this report and maybe we can see what's loading up on that machine.
Try a "chkdsk /r" from the command prompt. (reboot required)
Try running "sfc /scannow" from the start/run command line.

Using only one anti spyware program is not going to detect all spyware. Try MS antispyware, Adaware, Spybot S&D and webroot spysweeper and see what shows up.

Update: I see from your desktop that you have Kazaa installed. In that case you're on your own. Kazaa is filled with spyware.

Yes im using Kazaa Lite++ which is the none spyware version. I just got Microsoft Spyware and it detected Kazaa as a threat. So it will be removed.....do you think that could of caused the problem? The only thing thats telling me no, is that ive had kazaa installed on my Barton setup and it never had this problem in over a year of use.

i just ran Spybot, Adware, and MS Antispyware......also removed kazaa and rebooted.....check spyware again and came back to post.....happened again while i scrolled down the page fast to check out post. So it cant be spyware or adware....cant be kazaa.

Not entirely true. My daughter loaded that up a couple times until I told her to stop. Every time she installed it, she would have some spyware.
A more accurate description would be "reduced spyware version".

Im using a MX500 right now just to test it and see. I would use the Razer without the driver, but i cant get the setting i like without the Control panel the razer needs. It doesnt allow me to set it NO acceleration.

I was just thinking about it cause everytime this happens, im scrolling down the page to something. I also started alittle research about the razer and it seems like the past drivers had a problem with Nforce mobos. They wrote in the new drivers Read me that this was fixed. Do you think this really could mess around with my IE and mshtml.dll?

I put my Razer on my 2nd machine and just going to see what happens here.

Highlife, i think following your troubleshooting guide fixed the problem, specifically the "disable third party browser extension" or something like that did the trick :)

Nice, it worked for you?

I turned down the overclock alittle just to test it and see. Just seems really weird I can prime my machine for 12 hours at 2205 but IE crashes.....
