What is the biggest size of compatible memory card for the psp right now? the biggest one i've seen for sale is 512 mb. they are the sony duo or duo pro sticks. i'm hoping to be able to use my psp as an mp3 player as well as game player so that i don't need to buy an ipod or something like that, since i need something. my creative labs nomad zen nx totally stopped working at the end of summer last year.

i'm hoping to find a gig or 2 memory stick by the time the psp comes out, larger is better, less than 200 dollars is good too.

i think the gig stick is like 100 bucks and im not sure about a 2 gig but there might be,not sure about it and i will be doin the same instead of gettin an ipod im keepin that money and will be usin my psp as an mp3 player but if you really need to know ask Bad_Boy he knows everything thing there is to know

I think I'm going to invest in a very large usb memory stick (like one of those 5gb seagate ones), then use it as an mp3/video/gaming machine. And perhaps the other features which Gamespot said they did not denounce such as browser, word proccesor, e-mail client, and steaming tv.

the PSP only works with certain sony memory sticks, they are really small, like half the size of some other sticks. i dont' know if any other ones would work with it.

they only work with the DUO memory sticks, and I beleive they only come in 512mb!! dont you guys read the magazines?! :)

yeah thats right. sony psp only works with memory stick duo and memory stick pro duo. you cant hook a usb flash drive or hdd up to it as of now, but the psp has the ability to upgrade firmware via wifi from sony so i wouldnt be surprized if they opened up new features later in the year after the NA release.

about the memory stick, The biggest duo or pro duo ive seen is 1GB. sandisk recently lowered the prices for their memory sticks.

SanDisk recently announced that they have a new range of translucent memory stick PRO Duo and SD cards as an entry product to the portable game accessory market, more specifically, targeted for the PSP. Available in four capacities (128MB, 256MB, 512MB and 1GB) and colors (red, yellow, green and orange), the cards will range in price from $39.99 (128MB) to $159.99 (1GB).

The new SanDisk translucent memory sticks will be available in retailers worldwide by the end of January.

.... i wouldnt be surprized if we see a 2GB duo or pro duo memory stick around psp launch time.

they have been coming in bigger than 512, read above.

i've read all the magazines, but 512 is just not [H]ard enough to hold a decent portion of my 10 gigs of mp3's, not to mention movies if i ever want to use it for that, which i definately do if they can get memory cards in the 20 gig range :p

thank you bad boy! i'll be waiting till around release time and getting that 2 gigger for sure if they make it. if not i'm sure the 1 gig will drop price by launch.

got this from the official list of duo pro cards made by sandisk.

SanDisk 1024MB Memory Stick PRO Duo $204.99
Memory Stick PRO Duo is smaller than standard-size Memory Stick PRO media, with high speed data transfer, built-in MagicGate, and high capacities

that's not those new translucent ones, but that's what you can get right now.

yeah i wouldnt mind a 2GB memory stick either for my future psp :p
they have a 2GB memory stick out now, its just a regular memory stick and not a duo or pro duo, so it wont fit in the psp. :(

edit: if you look a bit harder you could probally find better deals than 200.

thats a 1 gig for 135 but i dunno how good that site is, just and example that the prices on the sticks are probally gonna be coming down.

i think the only way your gonna play movies on the psp is if sony releasses somekind of burner for those "universal" data disks. it would be pretty cool if you could buy blank ones and put files and stuff on them. i have 10 gig's of music 2 and i dont know about you but i dont listen to all that music anymore so having all 10 gig's with me is kinda useless.

i bet they will come down considerably for the psp launch, so that large sized memory sticks will appeal to the casual psp gamer. i'm pretty sure ecost is a decent site, so that's a better price than i was expecting.

an idea that me and a friend had was to carry around an external 200 gig hard drive or something in a backpack and play games/movies/mp3's off of it hehe. we then realized that external hard drives need to be plugged in, but if you could find a place to sit down and plug in, that'd be a great way to get good use out of your psp, especailly if you are going on a long trip, the hard drive would be nice to have

i do listen to all of my music every time i listen to it :p

and it's already been said by sony that they won't put out burnable discs, at least not right away, and that it can play movies straight from the memory card, they demonstrated that at ces.

not really.you can play movies just fine off the memory stick. ive already converted some movies for the memory stick (mostly chappelle show episodes lol), only thing missing is a psp :(

For your mp3s and small-size movies, you can use the Memory Stick Pro Duo. For retail movies, the only way you're going to get those is if a UMD version is released.

So far there's precisely one UMD movie on the way: Advent Children.

other people have been saying that when you format a movie to the psp's size and resolution it substantially lowers the bulk of the file, so you could fit it on one of the larger mem sticks

If you mean Hollywood movies, there's no way you're going to get a widescreen full-length movie on a 2GB Memory Stick. It's just not going to happen.

Well yes, but a widescreen movie scaled down to the resolution of a psp might.

ive converted 700mb 2HR xvid movies (in wide screen) to the psp format while retaining good quality under 512MB. its easily possible because the 3GP converter does a good job on compression and the native PSP resolution is pretty low compared to the orginal video.

Even at the PSP's 480x272, I really don't think it'll happen. I'd love to be proven wrong, though.

Which movies and what filesizes?

Wow I didn't realize how large the resolution was on such a small item.

And my question is, will usb flash drives work? I see no reason not, there is a usb port on the psp, but if anyone knows please speak up.

Also you have to think about what kind of codecs it can play, when you talk about minimizing files.

The USB port is just for hooking the PSP up to your PC to download firmware updates and transfer files to the Memory Stick. Givne that it's a Sony device, I doubt they're going to make it compatible with a competing standard to the Memory Stick. Heck, the PSP is Sony's Memory Stick wedge, just like how PS3 will be their Blu-Ray wedge.

It plays MP4 files, there's an unofficial program linked on that page that works, or there's "Image Converter 2" which is the official one (afaik).

I have a 512MB Pro Duo stick and it works perfectly. Encoded a movie (from DIVX to MP4), that's about an hour and a half, good video quality setting but lower audio (to save space), and it came in at around 220MB, could fit two movies on it like that (though if they get longer than 1 1/2 hours you'd have to either turn down the quality setting again, or only fit one movie).

The quality of video playback on the screen is really good.

I'm sure you guys can get memory sticks fairly cheap over there, I got one on Ebay (stores over here in Europe are incredibly expensive for memory sticks).
