Do I HAVE to have an SLi PSU to run in SLi?

I know that the high-end PSU's all have 2 PCIe connectors on them for SLi, and I know that most of the high-end PCIe video cards. However, what's to stop you from getting a regular PSU and 2 of these:

Heck, whats to stop your from taking one molex, splitting using a 1 to 2 converter, and then plugging both ends of the one you just split into one of these converters? Is it ABSOLOUTELY necessary that I blow $250 on a PCP&C 510 SLi?
