Situation:

I have a wireless network card. I connect to a wireless router. I have a roommate who also connects to it via wireless. We use the DHCP on the router to automatically assign our IPs. Linksys WRT54G is the router. We're both running Windows XP Pro.

Problem:

When I go to My Network Places and click VIEW WORKGROUP... I can't.
When I type \\HISCOMPUTERNAME I get an error, but when I type \\HIS IP ADDRESS It works.

I'm assuming this is a DNS problem. Can't be firewall, and can't be IP conflict. He doesn't have this problem, and I have it everywhere I go. I really want to figure this out.

it would be a netbios problem. and are you both on the same workgroup?

Windows can be extremely slow in picking up host names. The fact that you can connect with IP tells me everything is running fine. I wouldn't sweat it too much.

we're both in the same workgroup. The thing that sucks is that I can't even view workgroup computers. Plus I want to use his network printer and I can't use it without being able to contact him by his network name (\\IPADDRESS\PRINTERNAME doesn't work)

And his IP address isn't always the same. Nobody else has ever had this problem? Am I going to have to reformat to fix this. I haven't reformatted in like 2.5 years!
