Guys, I installed AVG free edition at work here, and we think we have a virus, running a scan as we speak, i am just wondering if its actually cracked up to what the reviews say it is, since it does update almost daily, any help will be great here!

1) We do have a software forum, where you might get better answers.
2) It does seem to be very good. I have a license for Symantec Corporate for some machines, but for my others, I use AVG and it's caught all the viruses I've attempted to copy there as a test.

Yeh its good but it does use a massive 24MB of RAM when idle and when all scanners are disabled

Detection-wise AVG is decent. avast! is probably a better freeware AV with detection.

now im getting worms, thru the POS-I touch system, I am a manager at a restaraunt here,

I need one thing here, unless we pay $75 per hr to talk to the people at pos-i touch, we are stuck on how to exit the screen to go to the windows background, if anyone knows it will surely save me alot of time and money here.

Also, is it possible to PASSWORD protect programs, such as outlook, Internet Explorer, etc. this is to keep my employees out of the programs and to help stop the infection of viruses

QFT - I gave up renewing my Symantec subscription this year in favor of a license of Avast! Pro on my main box, and have since installed the free 'Home' version on several of the other boxen around my apartment. The script blocking that comes with Avast! Pro is great, but even without it, the free 'Home' version is an extremely effective program at blocking/cleaning viruses from the web/e-mail/P2P/IRC/IM clients.

I'd definitely recommend Avast! over AVG or Norton AV any day - but perhaps that's just me. :p

At my college they issue Symantec. It's not very good. So I tried AVG. AVG is better than Symantec, but it still wasn't too great. Now I use Kaspersky, and I'm never turning back.

AVG has always been good for me. The only thing is, it can't access the "system volume information" folder on the root dir (C). You need to set file permissions as so to enable AVG to delete any virus hiding there, as follows.

GO to my computer, and go to the drive windows is installed on.
CLick on "Tools" in the toolbar, "folder options", and then hit the tab "View".
Check: Show hidden files and folders, uncheck "Hide protected operating system files (recommended)", and uncheck "Use simple file sharing (recommended)".

Now go back to the C drive, and you should be able to see a folder called "system volume information". Right click on it and go to properties.
Click the security tab, click add, type your username (normally displayed in the star menu) and click OK. and OK again on the properties window.
Now run a scan and it may find the viruses it tends to flag but never find on a scan.
Then I think AVG is excellent.
