My sister is having problems and I'm puzzled as to what the problem could be, she didn't have this problem until today. The only program installed recently was a lexmark printer which has since been uninstalled through safe mode along with alot of other worthless crap. Just a side note I'm also only able to help her over the phone, so I don't actually know more then what she's telling me.

Every time she tries to boot up the computer freezes at the windows98 screen. It hasn't gone past it once since I've talked to her, the only thing she can do is get into safe mode.

For reference this is an old ass computer, the most I know about it is that it has 48MB of RAM :confused: :eek:. I've gone through msconfig and gotten it down to bare essentials for startup, no viruses on it, I'm not sure about spyware, she's never installed adaware of spybot or anything like that.

Anybody got any ideas????? Help a guy out here :)

During startup tell her to lay ass on the F8 key and then do a selective startup. It will allow you to start one thing at a time and you can find out what is causing the problem.

On EDIT: ...errr maybe it's F5. It's been too long. Well, just smack both of them until she sees the Win98 boot menu.

Must be a rash of this going on. Third forum I've been on this evening and read nearly the same exact problem.

======TRY THIS========

Start--> Run
Type in:
sfc
Hit OK. Have your Win98 disc handy..it'll be asking you for it.

It is F5 that will allow you to do a selective startup. F8 allows you to enter safe mode.

I'll be sure to try the selective startup tonight with her, thats another problem of hers...

She bought the computer for $40 bucks so that'll give you an idea of how good of a comp it is, in other words she doesn't have a windows disk.

Maybe this'll teach her a lesson about how and who you buy a computer from :rolleyes:
