Im lost here, I have an older Compaq laptop (1020). I formated the hd and tried to install XP. I was unaware of the bios on the hd. New to me I guess  So now, I can not make the laptop boot from the floppy or cd rom. XP is not working, unless in safe mode.

The good news is that I have access to a twin of this laptop. My question is how do I copy the bios back onto the laptop. Again, I do have access to a working twin of this one. Im assuming that I can copy the bios on a floppy and install it in the laptop?

I have been to compaqs site and not much help there or in their forum

Thanks for any help

I have worked on a few compaqs, and they used a software package called rom-paqs that you installed on the hard drive. Go to their website and you should be able to find an updated one.

As mentioned before, the files you need are downloadable from the website. It's hp.com now, BTW. Also, they should default to looking for a floppy or a CD. If you can't boot from either, it might not be a BIOS problem.

If they are still available, the PAQ's that you used to be able to download would put the BIOS onto a floppy for you. All it really is, is a slick little GUI used to update settings in a flash ROM area, it doesn't have to be on the HDD (usually; though the compaq restores will sometimes look for them). I used to do this when we wanted to put a new HDD in a compaq with an uncopiable BIOS partition.

It's kind of useful to have a BIOS utility on floppy.

Cheers.
