I ordered 2 74gb Raptors from Newegg a couple of weeks before Christmas. One of them was DOA, would do nothing but click and crash. I sent it back to them and got my replacement drive today and the replacement is a refurb. Of course their "support" email system online is not working and i'm at work so I can't call them. Why would a manufacturer think it's ok to replace a brand new DOA drive with a refurb... If i wanted a refurb I would have bought a refurb. I'm not sure I have any power to remedy this situation but I know i'm pissed.

Did you read the fine print?

WD's replacement Product under its limited warranty will be manufactured from new and serviceable used parts.

That seems fairly shocking to me. From what I've seen, in the US, the retailer has no responsibility whatsoever for the quality of their goods at the point of sale. Is this true? In the UK, I've had a couple of Seagate drives go pop and I'll be dealing with the online vendor, rather than the manufacturer, which seems to me to give the consumer a bit more power.

If I bought a product and it was broken out of the box, I'd be straight back to the shop for a new one. Is this not how it works over there?

that's weird. according to what i understand from maxtor's RMA policy, DOA drives will be replaced like for like with new drives.

that being said, i'm currently happy with WD reliability over maxtor.

horseshit. i bought a new drive, it didn't work. it should be replaced with a new drive, end of story. I'm going to ebay this drive and never buy another WD drive again... i should have my head examined for going with them in the first place.

for real, i dont' know why people say crap like this, being turned away from a great company because of a warrenty disagreement.

you whould have rma'ed with newegg in the first place. Besides if it works it works right. I mean stuff you buy every day is recycled from other products

You bought the new drive from Newegg, not Western Digital. It's Newegg's responsiblity to exchange for a new drive, not Western Digital's. Western Digital doesn't know, nor probably care in this instance, that you just bought it new. They probably assumed it was a warranty exchange.

Does Newegg even do hard drive warranties/exchanges anymore? I thought they stopped...

That said, it is usually better to go through the retailer first, if possible.

How much you want for the refurb....nothing wrong with refurb units. The refurbs HAVE to be hand inspected and tested to go back out. I don't think every NEW drive gets tested, they just do batch testing.

Just for the record:

“Maxtor will, at its option, repair or replace the Product at no charge to you, provided it is returned during the Standard Warranty Period”

NewEgg as never failed to replace an item in the very rare instance I have had something defective. They just can’t do enough to keep people happy.

If you buy a new car and the engine totally fails, you get a rebuilt one. Kia or Mercedes it’s the way it works.

I agree with Tiny, that “referb” has been hand tested and it’s an odds on favorite to be just fine if not better then new.

Not to mention, it’s really lame to bad mouth a company for a policy you didn’t bother to read before you purchased the product.

Newegg refers WD hard drive returns back to WD, at least the raptors.

i would hope they'd at least get rid of the "BAD" that is on the drive... :p

WD has always given me refurbished drives when I do RMA's. However the refurbished RMA drives I receive typically last longer than the new drives I initially bought.

Who cares if it's refurbished if it works? It's don't think you'd be able to tell the difference between a new drive and a refurbished drive while using a computer.

That being said, I do think Maxtor has a better RMA program. I usually receive new drives back from Maxtor and in the rare cases where Maxtor doesn't have any of the drives in stock that you need replaced, they always upgrade you to the next level :D

You bought a 74GB Raptor, it didn't work and you sent it to WD. They sent you back a working drive. Problem solved.

this is why when a drive is DOA you send it back to the seller and get a new one.
(edit - nevermind oops dint read all posts, sorry)

not to change the subject any but if the vehicle is under factory warr you will get a new direct shipped motor that comes off the assy line. it is not rebuilt all parts are new.

i think i would try and email or call WD saying that u just bought the drive and it was DOA and ask for a new unit. it cant hurt any.

EH you should tell that to honda if your motor blows or anything they replace the parts that are damged. To get it in working condition.

Yes And I also agree. If you bought a New Hard Drive you should get it replaced with a new drive. Its the principal its like me buying a new car that doesnt work but i paid for and them replacing it with a used car... ;) :p

Oh and I bought a Raptor from Newegg about 2-3 months ago its been sitting around, I hope it works I havent checked... :o

I realize that it is just my limited case, but when I was using the popular WD 8MB cache drives when they first came out...

Had one of the early 100GB ones that were offered OEM before they became available at retail. Also had a 120GB retail unit.

The 100GB drive failed. WD claimed that no 8MB cache drives existed before retail, so they replaced it with a 2MB drive. I had to fight for weeks to get an 8MB cache drive.

The 120GB drive then failed, and one of the refurbs failed.

I ended up getting a 200GB Maxtor and a pair of Raptors in RAID 1 as insurance, so naturally I've had no further problems.
