Can anyone clear this up for me? I know the Raptors come in 36 and 74Gb flavours, but are there 2 different varieties of the 74Gb version? I saw mention somewhere (can't remember where unfortunately) that there is an improved version of the 74Gb one. Am I mistaken? The WD website wasn't very clear...

I think you misread this. The 36GB version was the old version of the hdd, the 74GB is the new version. The 74GB has not only more space but they also eliminated some problems they had with the 36GB version.

AFAIK, there is only one version of the 74GB Raptor
however there were 2 versions of the original Raptor - a normal one and a Dell one that was missing like a GB or so of space

thanks, although I'm putting together a RAID5 array and I'm probably going to swap the Caviar with Hitachi 7K250s because they are faster and $30 cheaper per drive at the egg
