I just got ripped in a hosting deal, and need to host some files asap. I have a spare box that is:

2.4C
IS7
512MB RAM
80GB hard drive

I would like to turn this into a server and host my files somehow. I have a 800kbps upload. I know that isn't that great, but it would be sufficient for my files and such. I have a router, and a dynamic IP address as far as I know. Is this idea possible? I already have bought my domain name.

Sure. While I have never done it, most people say apache is powerful and fairly easy to use.

dyndns.org
apache 2.x
gene6 ftp server
done.

~~P.S. find an old P2-400 with 192MB ram and a 10GB HD for the webserver, set it up with everything and realVNC, and tuck it in a closet with only power and network. VNC into it to change settings from then on. forget that system you have its way overkill.

if apache confuses you try www.analogx.com simple www server

don't forget to forward port 80 in your router to that machine's ip... I would forget about setting your web server with DHCP... I would set it to a static IP....inside your network behind the router.

if you need help email me jaqiefox >a< gmail >d< com

My closet box is a PPro 200, but it's more than enough for my home web / FTP / PHP work.

What would I need from http://www.dyndns.org/ ?

Also, I would prefer to do this for free, is there any service like http://www.dyndns.org/ that is free?

LadyJaqie

http://foxen.mine.nu (one of the ones I get through them for FREE)

I get that, and its free... its free from dyndns, it routes your dynamic ip to your host name whatever your ip address is.

oh btw before anyone starts complaining about me hotlinking files, check the ip of www.puresimplicity.net (hemi's server) and then check the IP of jaqie.mine.nu and foxen.mine.nu o_O now... tell me what's the purpouse of copying this image file from his dir over to mine and taking up more hard drive space, when its on the same server with the same bandwidth being used and everything in the first place, especially when we are good friends in the first place...

Just get another hosting deal. :p I used to host internally but it was just extra work. Now I pay like $9 a month for hosting options I'll never fully exploit, and you can even get basic hosting for as cheap as $4! :D

If we're talking about hosting, I used to use http://www.phpwebhosting.com. I never had a single problem with them. They were reliable and fast.

I think I am in the right area for my router setup. Here is what it shows me, but I don't know what to fill in.

With the excellent help of Veeb0rg, I almost had it working.

That was, until I found out that RCN has port 80 blocked.

LadyJaqie
