ok so i get the airboat.

i continue to drive it around for like 3 or 4 levels.

Talk about FILLER...sigh, couldn't wait for that part to get over with.

Ok, still no storyline.

Then I show up at Ravenholm.

Ok, so I don't know HOW i got here, or what this Halloween mock-up place is.
But OK, ill kill some more bad guys and monsters.

Ok, still going through this level, i meet another guy (shotgun guy) and still no storyline.

So I keep going, yada yada yada, meet ppl, kill bad guys, still no storyline.

I get to the dune buggy where I drive around forever not having much fun and finally get rocket launcher.

Ok, I kill a airplane thing, now i keep driving, WITH NO DAMN STORYLINE.

Seriously, this game would be fun if it had a fuggin story and not so much damn useless filler.

You obviously aren't paying attention to what the people in the story are saying to you. There is a story there, you just have to LISTEN. Todays ADD youth just can't focus long enough. Perhaps you'd be better off playing the Sponge Bob Squarepants game ;)

Agreed

**Possible Spoilers**

Allow me to spoon feed you the story. Between the time of the Black Mesa event and the time that Gordon wakes up on the train, the world has been conquered by a race of beings known as the Combine. This race has inflicted strict martial law on the remaining inhabitants of earth, they even go as far as to inhibit the humans ability to reproduce. They have also recruited Dr. Breen to be their human lackey. He is basically the human face for the combine. He tries to smooth over and justify all of the Combines restrictions and actions by saying it is all for the greater good of human immortality. From these ashes, a small rebel force has risen up, led by those who were on the front lines at Black Mesa. Gordon Freeman arrives, thanks to the G-Man, just in time to help out his old Black Mesa buddies and the struggling rebellion. To what end he helps the rebellion is not known, nor is it known how the G-Man plays into the Human, Combine, Zen triangle. But that's the intrigue of it.

That would be the premise, not the story. This game has NO story so far. Sure, you have background, and something to do. But there's nothing to advance the story. Play a game like NOLF or Max Panye, and you'll see what a story is like for a FPS...

Exactely.

I've been going through this, talking to people, meeting people, etc.

But I still don't know any-real-thing that's going on.

Robb@EPE, I really hope yer not another f4nboy: /

There's plenty of story going on. Sure, the first part is just a straight-up run like hell, but after that, things get moving. I mean, do you know why you're in the buggy heading down the road? They told you. Do you even know where you're going? They told you. Everything up to the airboat is exposition about the Combine and the current state of humanity, the airboat is just a cool action sequence, and then the story begins when you get to Black Mesa East. You learn more about the resistance and what they're up to, you meet some of the principal characters, especially Alyx, and some questions open up. What's Alyx's role in the resistance? Who is Mossman, and why does she not get along with Alyx? What's Breen really up to? Just when you find out who your fellow players are, the Combine shows up and tears everything apart. Ravenholm is another action sequence, designed to introduce the physics-based gameplay. Then, you reestablish contact with the resistance, and the plot gets moving again....

There's less story than, say, Deus Ex, but definitely more than the original Half-Life.

I've been paying attention. NO ADD or anything like that. I think he is just trying to say that it is lame that the whole time you are just running around looking for a scientist and there aren't any tough.....or interesting enemies. I think that he probably isn't too challenged by the little puzzles either, I find them more annoying than anything DOESN'T TAKE A GENIUS TO FIGURE THEM OUT.

There are some exciting parts though...shame they were interrupted by loading screens though. Cool water, definately a great game. But there are tons of filler parts you got to admit that. Some of them were put in to solely show off the physics engine and i would have rather been surrounded by a helicopters and aliens shooting at me than figure out that I need to put bricks on top of a lever(yawn). But thats just me.

btw no need for name calling or insults, the guy is just dissappointed with some elements of the game. I like the game, but there are definately a ton of stuff that was unnecessary and slowed down the action. e.g. loading screens

Glad it gets better, never played hl1. Does anyone know what the deal is with those weird small et looking aliens?

I agree with you about the "puzzles".

Yet we have a "Stuck in HL2" thread that is over 12 pages long. Makes you wonder about some of the people playing.

You think that valve just put those load times in to annoy you? I'm sure there was a technical reason for them.

Wow, so someone telling me "you have to get to ___location a___ by taking this airboat"

IS A STORYLINE ?! LOL ... No.

Everyone was hyping up HL2 to have this incredible storyline ... and sure enough, it doesn't.

I hope it picks up sometime soon cause this is just .... fun to play but most of the parts i just can't wait for them to get over with.

The airboat was so long and drawn out, sigh ... couldn't wait for that to get overwith.

The little puzzles _are_ very annoying. Some of them are cool and i chuckled, but the greater amount of them just makes me go, damnit, stupid.

Overall I'm having a great time playing it, but I'm just wondering where this all mighty awesome storyline is..

Oh well, hope things pick up soon.

The original HL used the same loading system. It helps the game flow better, rather than have one long level, and an even longer load time.

Well, I liked the airboat stuff. I loved the jumps and it was cool to when they put that gun on so you could actually fight that damn helicopter.

The green ones that shoot electricity from their hands? They're called Vortigaunts. They were a slave race in the first game. You fight them in the second half of HL1, only to find in the beginning of HL2 that they are now free (you killed their master at the end of the first game). They join the resistance against the Combine and fight on your side.

I don't really know what people were expecting when it came to HL2's storyline. It's right on par with the first one.

How did the first game go? "Gordon, get to ________." Then you meet resistance along the way. Then, at the end, there's the "big reveal" from the G-Man. Whether you thought it was "big" or not is completely subjective, and while I just reached the Citadel in HL2 it seems like it's on par with the original so far. People have expressed disappoitment with the ending, so maybe I'll change my tune then. We'll see I guess.

The Air Boat to me so far has been the most fun and intense.

Getting chased by that helicopter was crazy.

As for the storyline, yet, it's more like you're going through a movie and they aren't really telling you anything. You're just doing pointless a to pointless b.

Sure is fun getting there though.

This happens with every game. It gets hyped, and then eventually a bunch of people will post how it didn't live up to their expectations. Nothing new to that.

I wonder if there were people posting about how dooms story line sucked.

Doom had a story line? LOL
Anyways, the difference is I dont think people expected Doom to have a story line. Hell invades mars, youre a marine, go kill everything. Doom's hype was all about eye candy and graphics.

HL2 had significant hype for its story, not much of one implemented

I think people expected less a few year back too. People today just can't seem to be satisfied no matter what you give them. I don't think there is a developer alive that can meet some peoples expectations.

And just as a note, that last comment is not directed at the started of this thread. It's just a general statment.

It's true that Half-Life 2 does not tell the story in the way most of us are used to, but that is not neccesarily a bad thing.

I really like the way the story unfolds. It isn't just a couple cut-scenes in which everything is suddenly revealed. If you pay a lot of attention, like reading the stuff on the walls, talking to people (especailly on the first few levels), and listening to all of the scripted conversations, it will start to make sense.

I was expecting a more traditional ending too, but the more I think about the way HL2 did it, the more I like it.

I think why these kids are saying there is no story is becuase it is not being told to them. They are looking for cut scenes and videos. Did any of you ever play hl1? The reason there is none is to emerse you into the charecter, when they cut to a video of yourself it removes you from the charecter. The hl series was the first game that realy kept you inthe game. Making you feel like you are in a movie. Dont movies have "slow" spots and "filler". I would prefer this style of game to the cutscene aspect. Dont get me wrong cut scenes are nice, but imo remove you from the game. I loved the story in hl2, realy had that 1984 feel to it. But like others have said, you actualy have to look for the story. It will not be force fed to you as in other games. before you say there is no story mabey you should play the game again, this time pay attention to the world around you.

You realize there are people in this thread who are gonna say: "I wasn't even born in 1985, I don't know what happened."

Its pretty much personal preference and the way you see stuff I guess .. I'm enjoying HL2 and wasnt expecting much for a storyline , so I guess thats why its enough for me.

I enjoyed Doom3 too for what it was as well ...

Again, people are confusing story with premise. Imagine the last time you were told a story. When you're told a story, you are constantly given new details and information. HL2 is basically, "The Combine have taken over and now you're running from them. You are still running from them. Now, you are running again." Chances are, if someone were telling you that story, you'd be bored stiff. The premise behind HL2 is the Combine have taken over and Gordan Freeman must stay alive to help the resistance. The story would be what takes place while he tries to stay alive. And in the game, all that takes place is you shoot some soldiers and figure out a few puzzles.

Cutscenes are not the only way to tell a story in games. I think it would have been a lot better if Gordan was given a walkie-talkie and was in constant contact with Alyx or some of the other resistance people. There was one part in the sewers where hear you what's happening over a radio. That was pretty cool, but you couldn't just sit there and listen to the whole thing. Lack of interaction with other characters causes the story to feel empty.

I totally agree.

To those who think Halflife2 doesnt have a story:
Step 1: Go back and play Half Life 1 and understand & remember what happens.

Step 2: Learn this http://dictionary.reference.com/search?q=story

sto·ry1 Audio pronunciation of "story" ( P ) Pronunciation Key (stôr, str)
n. pl. sto·ries

1. An account or recital of an event or a series of events, either true or fictitious, as:
1. An account or report regarding the facts of an event or group of events: The witness changed her story under questioning.
2. An anecdote: came back from the trip with some good stories.
3. A lie: told us a story about the dog eating the cookies.
2.
1. A usually fictional prose or verse narrative intended to interest or amuse the hearer or reader; a tale.
2. A short story.
3. The plot of a narrative or dramatic work.
4. A news article or broadcast.
5. Something viewed as or providing material for a literary or journalistic treatment: “He was colorful, he was charismatic, he was controversial, he was a good story” (Terry Ann Knopf).
6. The background information regarding something: What's the story on these unpaid bills?
7. Romantic legend or tradition: a hero known to us in story.

**Those of you who think that HL2 doesnt have a story must be expecting some revolutionary movie plot with commentaries and someone at your side explaining to you what is going on.

Step 3: Tell us what game you think has a great story.

That's one of the things that I really like about the HL games. Not only are they good sci-fi action games, but I like the fact that you are Gordon Freeman. It's the fact that you're not just controlling Gordon or looking through his eyes. Since they never pull you out of the first person view you're never detached from the Gordon character. HL2 isn't the only game where the characters talk directly to you, but since they never pull out for cutscenes then they're always talking directly to you.

It tought to put my finger on, but I find the HL games to be among the most immersive I've ever played.
