I have two PATA drives. One used to be my system drive and still has an install of Windows on that I never intend to use again (actually, I can't since I switched motherboards). The other is just a storage drive. I installed XP on a Raptor and this will be my primary/system drive.
For some reason windows made the Raptor drive E, and the two PATA drives C and D. Is there any way to change this? I thought the Windows drive was always C.

You can rearrange the drive letters by right-clicking My Computer and choosing Manage, and under Storage there is an option for Disk Management where you can do such things.

You cannot change the system drive however.

I think their might be a utility out their to change the system drive, however it would have to be done before the system is booted. Might be able to do a trick from another install like a knoppix disk.
However short of that, the only way I have been able to get windows to install the system drive to C if you are using a RAID controller or SATA controller is to make sure NOTHING is attached to the PATA controller during install, then attach devices after you are done installing.
Anyone no other ways around this? Personnally it is not a big deal to have you system drive not be C, however I have run into an oddball program that was hardcoded to install to "C". I promptly chucked said program out the window.

The only way to chande this that actually works is to reformat and pay attention during the install. If I had a dollar for everytime someone posts on here that XP made their system volume something other than C, I'd buy Microsoft from Bill Gates. If your still unsure how to install XP and get it to make the system volume C, unplug every other drive in the system, until you get XP installed.
