so they sent me a 250 gig drive, which was a plesant supprise.
however when i went to the computer managment disk managment tool under windows 2000 the drive showd the max formatable size to be 130 gb???
can windows 2000 handel the 250 gb drive?
or is 200 gb the max?

you need at least service pack 4 for windows 2000 to go over 130gb or sp1 for windows xp

get that service pack and you should be golden

i still cant get it to work....
grrrrr
i have re installed service pack 4, windows updates, formated the drive, and rebooted, deleted the partition and reboted again....
still the max size says 128gb instead of 250 like it should be...

you might have to update the bios on your motherboard.. i put my 160 gig in a computer and it didn't all show up,, i only got 128gigs.. i updated the bios, updated win2k.. nothing worked until i put it in my shuttle... .so your motherboard might be too old..

edit.. i jsut looked up your board.. and it is from 2001.. so i would definitely try to update the bios.. if nothign else works. you will probably need an ide controller card which seems like a waste becasye you could probably get a shuttle an35ultra mobo for a few $$ more than the card...

i did almost get a 200 gig drive for $100 on sale because the sample box had a sticker saying free ide card.. but then they guy brought the only hd left out form the back.. and it idn't have the card..

ok, i understand the size limitations of 130 gb
but
i had the 200 gig drivwe working on the same OS build that i am running rightnow...
what gives?
it should work right?
i mean if its past the 130 gb limit, why does it get all pissy with the extra 50 gb...
i will try updateing my bios, i have no done that in a while
thanks for the tip

ok, i got it by useing the data life guard program...
is this a safe way to go about doing it?
i ask because in the windows drive manager it shows the drive as haveing only 130 gm allocated and 100 not allocated. but the drive says it is 230 gb under my computer when i click properties on this...
should i spend the time and mess with the bios and other things to see if i can get it that way...
my main concern is drive reliability

is the 200 gb working on that same motherboard? or a different motherboard with win2k sp4? i don't think it is the OS.. i think it is the motherboard..

edit.. i am seeing your new post.. that data life guard program is probably a ddo (dynamic drive overlay) you might want to check the forums.. but if something happens to the drive it might make it more difficult to get ytour data off because of this extra software that is used to make it all accessable...

you can get partition magic's trial and see if you can see the whole drive with that, if you can then your mobo is fine and it is a software issue.

Okay, not sure why this still surprises people, but here goes. The info was correct that you need SP4 to be able to use larger drives as a single partition. However, once you installed SP4, the partition doesn't magically resize itself, which is what you were expecting. Drive Management shows 130 allocated and 100 GB free. This is how it should be. As the above poster mentioned, if you want to resize the partition to the whole capacity of the drive, you'll need something like PartitionMagic to do it.

Actually, even if you install SP4 for Windows 2000, the 48-bit LBA addressing support is turned off by default in the Windows registry. As such, you cannot access the remainder of the hard disk unless you take the following steps described below.

To manually enable large hard disk support in the Windows 2000 registry, follow the steps as described in the link below:

How To Enable 48-Bit LBA Addressing (HD Support Over 137GB) In Windows 2000 (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/305098/EN-US)

Only after all that is done, you can access the remainder of the hard disk (by creating and formatting a new partition).

On the other hand, if you're a Windows XP user, simply downloading and installing SP1 or later will automatically enable 48-bit LBA addressing in the registry by default. Hard drive support over 137GB is also enabled by default on new installations of Windows XP performed from Setup disks with SP1 or later already slipstreamed into them.

so is my drive set up the correct way?
i think the western digital data life guard program did the reg edit for me because it said that i couldent support drive above 130 gb and that if i click OK it will fix that for me. after clicking ok it rebooted and the drive was able to be formated at 250(230 some gb after alls said and done)
is this drive considered "reliable" now?
thanks for all the advice
