Whats the best way to ship a harddrive? I doubt I have the original box, the thing is a good 4 years old.

4 Years old? And you were still able to get an RMA? That's impressive. Usually on Seagates, and some SCSI drives have warranties past 3.

Best thing is contact the manufacturer and see if they'll let you do an Advanced RMA. They take a credit card number and send you a new drive, you send the old drive in the same package back. Often times there's no charge to you, they keep the card number in case you decide not to ship the old drive back.

Without having a hard drive shipping box, there's really not a good way to ship it back. There are a lot of ways to ship it back but many drive makers will use any excuse to void the warranty of the drive due to shipping.

Yeah, its a Seagate so it has a 5 year warranty. I guess I'll call tomorrow and try for an advance RMA.

Hey,
i just sent back a 9Gb SCSI drive 5 days before it's warrantee expired. Got an 18Gb'er back.
The manufacturer usually has instructions on the site, such as Seagates' pdf here (http://www.seagate.com/support/service/pdf/pack.pdf).
