Anyone using the test versions of FC3? I know the release date is next week and can't wait for it. I am just wondering if it is a bad idea to upgrade a FC2 install to FC3 once it goes official.

I have always been told it is bad practice to throw one OS over another OS. I have no problems backing up my files & creating a new partition with a new OS on it.

Anyone have some info that could clear this up for me?

Thanks

Carlos Will

Do yourself a favor and get suse 9.2 instead.

Given the number of things I've found wrong with past fedora releases, this is really sound advice. Add on top that Suse far more polished, I will never go back to fedora.

As to your other question: Do whatever you want with your OSes and Boxes. They are yours to play with, no one else's. In a business environment, it's a bad idea to toss around OSes and boxes, but in a home environment, who cares?

I don't really have any issues with FC so would hate to lose all the info I have struggled to learn.

I have never used SUSE but one day I might.

I have never used SUSE but one day I might. You mean everything you learn on one Linux distribution is exclusive to that distribution and not applicable anywhere else? *boggle* What a concept...Wow.

Pay no attention to the bsd zealot behind the curtain. ;)

Come one man - No need for givning me a hard time. I am just saying that I have very little comfort in Linux as it is so having some back ground with Fedora is the only thing I have going for me. I struggle with simple commands to everything else. At least I can use RPM's and YUM in the FC layout and the install is fail proof.

I am fully aware many commands and other linux steps work across the board however I just don't have the knowledge to install

Gentoo
Debian
Slackware

These are all distros that made me want to smash my face into the monitor during the install process :(

Suse is on par, if not easier, to install than Fedora core 2. I don't know about 3 however. But then, ihaven't had a chance to install suse 9.2, so we'll see ( downloading via the torrent right now ).

Come one man - No need for givning me a hard time.I didn't mean anything personal by it. Just stick with Linux (or any other *nix) and you'll eventually get the hang of it. The more you use it, the more "distribution-independent" you'll become. My comment was more a shot towards the people that think "Red Hat == Linux" or any other distribution...

God, why is it when somebody asks a question about a distro everyone has to pipe up about what distro they think should be used instead?

Anyway, I downloaded and installed RC3...was having issues with my Radeon 7000 (big suprise...ATi linux support sucks)...so I havn't messed with it too much. When the final release comes out, I'll put it on my nvidia box.

Suse is not free???

There is a free "Personal Edition" (one disc versus three (at least there was with 9.1)). But yes, the full Professional version is about $90.

Suse is free, even the professional edition I believe. They just don't have handy dandy and convient ISOs for the cds. If, however, you are willing to ftp the directory tree down, I believe you get the professional edition. All 7.2 gigs worth.

Then you do an NFS install. And life is good.

Let's get back on topic:

Personally, I'm going to wait a few weeks after the initial release of FC3 to see if there are any major problems with it that would prevent me from wanting to upgrade. Also, I probably won't upgrade immediately because my FC2 box is doing everything I need it to and I would have no reason to upgrade.
As for installing over another OS or starting clean...I would always start clean. I'm always looking for an excuse to wipe my HD and clean things up a bit.
