View Full Version : Floppy Drive? Huh? Where is this HD?

Well I just got my rig up, thank god. Took a bit more work than I thought it would. I installed Windows XP Pro SP2 on it with no problems. When it came up to the setup screen where I can choose what to partition, it displayed two Hard Drives which is correct. I installed XP on the first drive and left the other one.

Now that it is installed, I only have 1 hd, Local Disk (C:). Instead of a second HD, I have a Floppy Drive? I clearly do not have a floppy drive in my case? Wtf? I know that my IDE cables are correct b/c of the fact it came up when I chose the partition.

The hard drives are brand new and are the exact same one. WD Cavier 80gb 8mb cache.

When in the Device Manager, under disk drives, It says that I have two HDs installed. "WDC WD800JB-00JJA0" one under another. Then it says under floppy disk drives, "Floppy Disk Drive". When I check the properties of the floppy drive, it says it has 0mb of space.. Its not connected.. There is no floppy drive!!

Any ideas? Please guys... I'm so anxious to get this system going. First build :).

what cable is the "floppy drive" hooked up to? if they are on the same cable, then i would try the following, in this order:
(1) check jumper on mislabeled drive to see if it is set to S (slave) or CS (cable select). i would make sure it's on slave cuz i do not trust the cable to select for me.
(2) if it is a slave drive, make sure it's on the 2nd to last connector. i have heard that it confuses the comp to have a slave drive at the end of the ide cable for some reason.
(3) if nothing else fixes the problem, i would switch the second hdd to the second ide cable, set the jumper to M (master) and see if it works then.

if it still fails, then i would rma the drive because "my system did not recognize the drive correctly no matter what i did".

Ok. I put the jumper on the 2 pins that are 2 from the right ( Closest to the PSU spot ). No dice. I then but It on Slave w/ Master Present which is 3 from the right. No dice. Any idea?

Thanks

EDIT:

Just an update. I went into my bios and disabled the floppy drive. That worked fine. In the bios it detects both Hard Drives, one as a slave and the other obviously as a master. In windows, It only shows one hard drive when I go to my computer. In device manager, it shows two.

Help

dumb@$$ suggestion: try installing a floppy or card reader... that should clear up the problem... and floppy drives can be had for less than $10.

No need for a floppy at this point.. I disabled the floppy drive through the bios so no problems there. The problem is, only HD is not being detected. I can see it in the device manager but I can't browse it or see it in my computer..

Sorry to waste your time guys. I didn't partition the other drive thinking that I only had to partition the drive that I was going to install windows on. So yes, point and laugh. Its my first build ;).
