I must replace the hard drive in my IBM i1412 laptop. The drive being replaced is "ATA/IDE." Question: Must the replacement drive be “ATA/IDE” as well, or can it be ATA 3, or ATA 4, Ultra, etc.? Finding a replacement drive described as simply “ATA/IDE” has been difficult. I’m unable to determine if my motherboard supports any of the variant interfaces.

Any laptop drive should work, but you should check the compatibility just to be safe.

ata is vague..if its ATA133, I believe that is considered UDMA mode 5, whereas ATA100 is UDMA Mode 4..etc..3 and 2 are for obviously slower atapi devices, along with the multi-word devices.
Serial ATA (ata150) is UDMA Mode 6.
