...and 2gb of ram? isn't that a bit too much even for 2006??? :( :)
The comments were merely speculation based on what sort of high-end visual themes and filesystem changes were even possible by 2006, whether they were implemeted or not. That system requirements scare was a classic exercise in vaporware that likely won't translate into reality.

Since I have ran longhorn on my dual 933 with 768MB of ram, I think you'll be ok. ;)

do you need activation?

Yes. Microsoft employees do have to activate their copies on their machines at work.

The longhorn you can download doesnt include all the "nifty" features MS has planned for longhorn. At least last time I checked it didn't include the new interface display system .

Nifty features? I thought they were stripping them all out, more and more going each month just to meet the 2006 deadline :p

I'm not saying they will be there when it's released :)

The big news was the Avalon system (which is the new way the the OS would display the desktop, a.k.a using acceleration to render everything) has been removed in order to make the 2006 deadline. Also, WinFS has been cut.
Avalon was going to be the biggest reason to upgrade. Time to say Bye-Bye...

Avalon was not cut, I wish people would stop making up shit or getting news from people posting on slashdot. WinFS was delayed, so it won't be in longhorn when it's released but will be availible as a download a year later. Nothing else has been cut, and they are not cutting features each month, fud spreading trolls. MS delays ONE feature and the trolls go apeshit and say longhorn will be XP with a new splash screen, it's retarded..

but what will longhorn have, that require so much power?

snip, snip....but what will longhorn have, that require so much power?
WMP56? IE9.0? DirectX 14? OE 11?
Maybe a brand new one....ActiveXP?
I'm sure they'll come up with some bloat from somewhere. :D

You'll be able to run it just fine on your current rig. They cut out Avalon, that's what the high-end machine was needed for.

It was posted all over the net and in several magazines, not just slashdot, that Avalon was pushed back as well. Obviously I don't know, I didn't get inside news, but generally when the entire news community is reporting it, and MS doesn't rebute it, it's got a decent chance of being true.
Plus, releasing WinFS as a service pack/addon really pisses me off. I had to do so damn much testing before we rolled out SP2. I can't imagine all the work I'll do after we roll out Longhorn, then in a few months have to roll out the equivilent of a new OS all over again.
But I'm pretty sure the features and benefits of WinFS will be cool enough for me to still enjoy it a little. :)

I doubt Longhorn will need a 4ghz processor. I have successfully ran it on a Celeron 667 (very very slow).

Oh really? What else would you call something that is removed from the release list? "Cut" seems to be the best word to descirbe it
Ok WinFS will be release as a SP bu tall that means is you wll have to then (if you want) change your FS to WinFS. Now I did a FAT32 to NTFS in a W2K environement once and its performance was no where near as good as a fresh NTFS install.
If it is a SP release How do you install base operating system as WinFS????

I wasn't arguing that WinFS wasn't cut, I was just letting them know that it will be released eventually, and that avalon was not cut at all.

You don't understand winfs. The file system remains NTFS when using WinFS and you do not need to change filesystems, or format for best performance. It's like a program that runs and provides services like advanced searching, etc from NTFS.
http://www.oreillynet.com/cs/user/view/cs_msg/44028 explains it.
