ok well here's my problem

I can't get my text-to-speech function to work in the control pannel, when i click on it it says this

The requested task cannot be carried out because the necessary engine could not be created. Please select a different engine and/ or a different audio device.

or

Could not intialize volume meter. Please select a different audio input device

So I have two audio devices, my onboard and a sound blaster live! sound card which is what I use my speakers and mic on, and either one i set it to still gives me error.

any help or advice? it would be most apreciated....

Did you try Disabling one and using the other? I also have onboard Audio and a Sound blaster card. I have the Onboard Mobo device disabled and Soundblaster the default sound device. Maybe it's confused on which one to use.

the onboard was disabled at first when I tried clicking on it the first time

I have no re-enabled it and have not seen a change

think I need to re-use my music using the onboard so it knows it's still working?

Wouldn't make a difference. I did a quick search on the Microsoft knowledge base and found this (http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;838659&Product=winxp)

Does this fix it?

yes and no

it pin-pointed the source of the problem - great

only problem is they say to download a hotfix to call microsoft? HA! Forget that, that's asking for me to pull my hair out

I deleted the file, i'll see if windows makes a new one and if not i'll see what else i can do

My friends and I were drunk as hell one night and started playing with the speach to text function in windows xp. We swore at it and laughed at the guesses it was making. It was fucking hilarious.

Not sure what that has to do with your problem. Thought I'd share though. :o
