So I just got a new seagate for my primary HD (to replace my whiney WD). I copy everything over and make a new mbr for the partition. No matter what I try I still can't get windows to load with the seagate, even after doing going through the recovery console, or using seagates software to make the drive bootable as well. Is there something I'm missing?

From Recovery console did you do a fixboot, bootcfg or fixmbr? Boot cfg I think is the one that writes a new boot.ini. I'm assuming since you did the new master boot record that fixmbr has been done. Bootcfg will find OS's and write a new boot ini, which it sounds like where you are going wrong. I'm also assuming the new seagate is the only drive? You took the old one out? Hmmm, but shouldnt the old boot ini point to hard disk 0 which the new seagate is... You might want to access boot.ini from recovery consiole and see what is there. C:\boot.ini, it should at least have the following default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional (bootscreen)" /fastdetect /KERNEL=kernel1.exe

sorry for being confusing, i think im second guessing even myself.

Did you just "copy" everything over or did you use something like Ghost to move the system over?

I -really- doubt a simple copy would leave Windows usable.

I have this same problem, but it occurs right after Windows copies files and then asks me to restart. I can install anything Linux, but no Windows. If anyone could help I'd really appreciate it, this thing makes me really

Also if you do that is one thing you can mark off of the checklist that isnt causing it. My rule of thumb when installing a new hard drive to have my O S on I format it and my old HD with my bootdisk and take the power and Ide cables out of my old one and then reinstall windows. Sounds like to me your both going to have to let go of the stuff you were trying to save and format using a boot disk. Try what I have said and I guaruntee you can both solve your problems.

Therein lies the problem, I've tried to do that, but to update the BIOS you need to create a Windows boot disk, and I can't get into Windows, also, you have to be in DOS when you update the BIOS.

You may need to copy ntldr and ntdetect.com.

Sorry I was thinking from a machine builder perspective. Note always make a boot disk and put it in the box that your O S came in right after you install a O S. Note you can make a boot disk from any computer with windows. I would only use a boot disk from windows 98 or later. My current boot disk is an M.E. boot disk. Also for the record I never ever listen to the directions that come with hardware.

Try this reset the C.M.O.S. jumper on your motherboard. it resets all the settings of your bios. Have you looked in your bios to see the settings? Check it and post what is says after you reset your C.M.O.S.

Yeah I've made an XP boot disk with my brothers computer, and I've loaded the fail safe defaults and stuff with my bios. Any suggestions as to how to continue?

It's not bios. If you installed linux and used lilo or grub it writes to a part of the drive that when you do a regular windows format doesn't fix it. So it boots from the CD and copies all your files to the partitions it created it didn't change what needed to be changed in the bootloader/mbr/idfk i'm not sure which I just know how to fix it. Get the install disk that came with your drive. If you can't find it go to your prospective drive manufactures site and download the thing. What you have to do is either write zero's to the drive or a new mbr depending on the drive utility you have. Low level takes a long long time on a decent sized drive and it will destroy everything on the drive. If you can get a way with a new mbr do that, it only takes a minute. Then you can install windows and have the machine boot again.

On the system copy... Download norton ghost and do a disk copy down to the boot record. Works every time, just don't get source and destination drive mixed up as it does not care and will copy a blank drive to the one with all your data on it. Other than that you're going to have to do a new install and copy your files over after your install is done.

Hope all this helps.
