My pc crashed and wouldn;t boot to windows, kept getting the blue screen error:

UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME

and I had to recover using chkdsk /r and fixboot...Chkdsk said that it found and fixed errors and fixboot said the boot sector was corupted. I seem to be running fine now but I am a little worried. I hear some sounds once in a while, a few clicks...but not the extreme clicking like I had before with an IBM Deskstar (Deathstar) that crapped out. I have an 2nd hd I formated to try mandrake but I new the drive most likely had problems and its now just sitting dead as I went back to the single drive and wiped out LILO on hd1. Anyways, I am gonna take out that dead hd2 to make sure where the infrequent(once or twice a day if any) sound/click could be coming from. But I am more concerned that I had the error...the file and boot sector corruption. Has anyone else had this error before? Was it ultimatly a sign leading to a dead hard drive?

btw WD800JB about a year old

I didnt know what it was until I seen, that the boot sector was Corrupted.
So FDISK your harddrive.

Download WD's HDD test utility and run it.

which utility is that?

is it the DLG diagnoctic that creates a bootable diagnostic disc?

or is it the Win DLG or somthing else?

Well I used win dlg diagnoctic and the scan couldn't finish, "too many bad sectors." It says I need to retest but it sounds like my drive is dying and I will probably be RMAing the drive soon. Anyways thanks for the help

You want the bootable disk version. The Windows version might work, but it's better to use the more traditional way :)

The results from the Win DLG version don't sound too promising. It's definitely not a bad idea to RMA the drive at this point.
