Which is better

I have a SATA controller on my motherboard. is there any performance gain by using a SATA hard drive, or should i just use a EIDE hard drive.

The performance deltas are nonexistant, really. You get a thinner cable that can fall out and drives that are physically not any faster than their PATA counterparts (actually, most still use onboard converter chips). Don't forget about potential driver drama, either.

It's a shame your not using an Intel chipset board, because they don't need special drivers unless your running a RAID array. The performance isn't a factor, but if you have an SATA drive, it's great to use because it frees up one more PATA slot.
