I installed SP2 the other day: no problem. However, when Windows informed me that there were some updates that needed installing, I installed 'em: problem. The machine re-booted and then after the initial system set-up screen, I get this: system32\drivers\ntfs.sys

I have no idea how to fix this or how to get around it to try to fix it. The screen just hangs with that message and any key I try to hit F8, etc., just re-boots the machine and I come right back to this.

Before installing SP2, I updated my nVidia drivers to 61.77, ran DriverCleaner and after a bit of "oops. I shouldn't have done that.", and things ran relatively things smoothly.

Suggestions? Thanks!!

Have you tried getting into safe mode? Or the recovery console that comes off the XP disk?

I tried going into safe mode as the machine is booting up, but that only restarts it.

So, when I pop in the WinXP CD, what's the next step?

Thanks, bud!

I belive you have to boot from the CD, then once your on the menu, click I want to set up Windows XP. Then after that hit R for the recovery console. (Option is on that menu too) It's pretty much self explanatory from there.

Boot from the CD, follow the instructions for the Recovery Console, and then when you get to a dos prompt, run chkdsk

Thanks for the responses, guys. :)

Now, when I run chkdsk at the DOS prompt, is that literally just a matter of typing "chkdsk" at the prompt and hitting 'enter'? It's been so long since I've done just about anything from a DOS prompt that what used to rudimentary, might as well be analytical geometry now.

Pardon my n00bage too. ;)

Yes, but you can also type chkdsk /? to find out the optional switches.

Sounds like a plan. Now, after that, should I try to uninstall SP2 or will that be done automatically after I recover? Basically, how far back will I be going when I recover? That's the real question, I guess.
