I have an old Compaq running Windows ME that won't run Defrag or Scandisk anymore. Every time I try running either one, it will go so far then stop, then will start all over from the beginning again. What can I do to get it to run a complete defrag without stopping?

Try some software that's a million times better. Diskeeper Lite is free and will do a great job...much better than ME's built in defragger.

hmm...its been a while since i've been on a 9x platform so someone correct me if i'm wrong. I thought this was a normal function. Everytime a change is made to the disk, it has to start over. wheather it be the program making the changes or you.

If possible try to Defrag in safe mode. I know there some kind of back ground program running causing Defrag/scandisk to start over- has something to do with hard drive access. Its been a while since I've even seen WinME

There is a program either foreground or background that is accessing the HDD during defrag which causes the defrag process to start over. As one has already suggested, defrag in safe mode.

What I do on a 9x machine is get to the task manager (ctrl-alt-del) and kill every running process except explorer and systray. If you are on a DSL/Cable connection, I would unplug if from the internet prior to do this as this will kill any firewall/virus protection that you have.

I can't honestly understand why they didn't ship the dos defrag as well with 98 and ME. The "can't be disturbed"-aspect of it is much less of a hassle in dos.
