wont let me install the recovery console via
d:\i386\winnt32.exe /cmdcons

I get a "your trying to install and older version" crap
and I did this yesterday with the same disk prior to SP2
not sure if its just an XP problem or not since we are taking about a OEM XP Home CD

I would suggest trying a slipstreamed copy or as an alternate method extract the SP2 files to a network share and run the command via \\<uncpatch>\i386\winnt32.exe /cmdcons
