Well I finally started my first extensive MOD.

The following are a few profiles of the plane I will model the case after FW 190 or FW 190 D - I will be using a paint scheme and a few other details to give the look a feel.

The case is the Antec Sonata - the following are pix of the phase one - case de-construction. I began by drilling out all the rivets to remove the outter steel skin so I can mod and paint the chasis.

The next step will be to determine how I can mount the front 120mm fan closer to the front of the case - I am willing to give up several of the 3.5 bays to accoumplish this but need to determine how best to install the fan. (any and all ideas are welcome)

I'd like to say good work but so far all you've done is take it apart. What are you planning to do to the case? Perhaps if you tell us some (not everything so that we are surprised in the end;)) of what you want to do, more people will be interested in the project.

Here are a few more details:

1) Mod case for turbine 120mm front intake - fan to be modded to be similar to that of the FW 190

2) Mod door to add fan intake that will be similar to the superchager intake on the FW 190 D (60 or 80mm fan)

3) Paint the case in a camo pattern from WW2

4) Add inside and ourtside detailing to provide more of the correct look and feel

5) There are also other things I am considering but still in the planning stage - machine guns, access panels...

That's more like it. :D I'll really have to follow this project since aviation history is one of my passions.

Another idea is to add more rivets along the outside so that it looks like different pieces of aluminum were used in the construction like a real airplane is. I have a pic of someone who did something similar that I'll upload for you later so that you can get a better understanding of what I'm suggesting.

BTW - I have considered this in but only as rivets around the edge of the access panel as opposed to the entire case. I think I linke the entire case!! I guess the current situation is that I have not got past the internals yet - being this is my first real mod I need to figure things out as I do them...

FYI, that isn't my case. It's someone else's from this forum I saved over a year ago cause I liked the style. I've since gotten into the habit of saving the images of most of the case mods I see that are really good for situations like this where they can be used for others to reference.

Thanks again for the post - here is a photo that shows some of the detail I will be adding - the supercharger intake on the FW 190 D will be a side mounted fan intake blowing onto the GFX card and mobo. Additionally I have some ideas about how to simulate the aircraft pannels

Sorry for the slow update - family,work... blah blah blah. Anyway I have picked up some supplies to do a mockup of the aircraft panels as suggested by sobek. Additionally I picked up a 2.5 inch PVC elbow fitting that I intend to mod into the supercharger intake as seens in the picture a few posts back. I should be able to post pix of the panel this weekend.

minor update - did not have as much time as I though this weekend but I did manage to get the dremel out and do my rivet test.

This is the first cut - I removed the forward facing section of the 3.5 drive cage - this left room for two 3.5 drives.

This is a .25mm section of Aluminum - I was testing to see if I could fab some fake rivets out of push pin heads. After cutting them down and painting they turned out nice yet the major problem is the root of the pin s very hard to fully remove. The root made an indentation on the rear surface so this will not work because I can not mout the faux panel flush with the side of the case. If anyone has ideas on what I can use I would be greatful. The size need to be no more that that of a #2 pencil eraser head.


Tell me if it look ral enough and comment on the scale - should the rivets be smaller, should the spacing be further apart... all ideas welcome :D

It might be much less of a headache to use real rivets. The gun and about 50 rivets won't set you back more than 15 dollars if you shop around.

Can't wait to see this. My dad is an IL2/CFS nut and he would love this idea!

Ness thanks for the reply - as for the rivet gun... well I have one (I assume you mean pop rivets) that I will use to re-reviet the case back together again.

The issue with that type of rivet is that they will look wrong. The rivets were smooth on the top and slightly recessed. If I were to use pop rivets I think it would look worse then if I had not.

If I have time this week I will do a test of some 3mm rivets that are the sam size my case has to illistrate my point.

Can you drill tiny hole for pin to stick through, bend the pin for mounting? Just a thought.

just sand down the nub or get a small hand file and sand it down before you attach it you chould also fill them in on the back with bondo or something so you get a full 100% attachement of the pins.

Thanks for the ideas guys! Although both can be made to work I have come up with an alternative I am going to try - I am going to buy a thin peice of plactic sheet and use a hole punch to make the simulated rivvet heads and then attach them. I hope to get this done alone with some more case cutting.

Here is a side shot just to show you a bit more detail.

With this part done I need to smooth out some of the rough edges and the paint the inside of the case - I am looking for a paint that will be a close match for RLM 2 (a shade of grey) which is the WW2 color used on the inside surfaces of the FW 190's.

BTW thanks for all your ideas... it really helps seeing how this is my first real attempt.

FYI All - the project has been on hold since my last post due to a problem locating the correct paint of the inside of my case. In ww2 the real FW 190s used a grey-green color which was called RLM 2. I have finally found a small hobby company that makes paints for llarge scale RC planes. They have something that appears to be a match so I ordered some today! I am not sure how long it will take to process the order but I will post results as soon as I am able to paint.

If anyone out there has any suggestions for a color match for RLM 2 and any other RLM colors in a spray can form it would be a big help :)

I hope you all have had your fill of BBQ I know I did! I did sneak in some mod time and got the first coat of RLM 2 paint applied. I am planning on doing a little wet-sanding and then doing another coat. Here is a pix to so far - I hope to have more time next weekend to make some more progress.

Sorry for th elack of update life is busy and this freaking worm thats hit the network at work has me busy...

Currently I have done the 2nd coat for the internal case frame and have decided to bondo the ANTEC logo that is punched into both sides of the case. I should be able to post a few pix this weekend... crossing my fingers

Here is the update I promised! aka my first time working with Bondo :)

So I decided having the Antec logo drilled into the sides of the case did not fit the look and feel I wanted so I decided to cover it up with a little help from the Bondo corp.

To allow the Bondo to take hold I had to cut a small section of metal to cover the back of the holes

Next I cleaned and sanded (150 grit) the front to prep it for the Bondo application

This was followed by the application of some Bondo - I needed to work quick since it sets up FAST!

Finally I sanded (150 then 400 grit) it down to a smooth even surface so it's ready to prime!

In the last pix you can see two small red spots - the spots are small areas filled with another Bondo product called Glazing & Spot Putty which covered the imperfections perfectly!!

I know this is going off topic a bit but my fav is the Panther although the Tiger is a close second. As for Whittman story esp the part in Normandy vs. when he and his crew destroyed the spearhead of an entire unit is outstanding. You are going have to build a TANK mod with skirt armor - zimmert... :D

the only really sad thing is seeing the finish go. i have one at home and i can attest to how absolutely unreal the finish is on the case.

I am still having problems obtaining the right color of paint in a spray can form..

Hmmm, case looks familiar. Thought people would have forgotten about this work many moons ago.

Never did finish it as it was a sort of proof of concept for the side intakes, thematic design, and the rivets.

The rivets you are best to go faux. I used real rivets and some real metal tin sheets. The problem with real rivets is the backside. If you want to place them near the panel edges it presents problems for sliding in and flushing. I had to grind away the back side of the rivets and also fill in the little holes.

Depending on the scale you are going to be using I think the idea of thumbtack heads or using some styrene sheets and punching out circles would work. The styrene however would have a square cut and not curved dome like appearance.

The following is a pix of the other side of the case (non door) I used just the Bondo spot putty and sanded with 400 git snadpaper. I hope to do more this next weekend!

Awsome concept. I saw a bunch of those types of plane (not sure if it was that exact one, and if they were just replicas) in a Flight museum in Germany last spring!

How did you get the bondo to stick in the holes like that? I tried that myself, however was daunted as it keep just oozing through!

Thanks fot the post - they way I did it was to cut a peice of metal out and cover the holes from behind then fill the holes... simple yet effective! And smooth as a babies bottom :D

well I just finished the base coat on the door - the color is a grey green (RLM 2) and it cam out real nice. I should be able post the pictures this weekend.

As promised here a a pix of my ANTEC Sonata door - see how the ANTEC logo has been bondo'd away :D This is just the base coat the side air intake and rivits are next. Once that is completed I will work on the final paint job. I will stay focused on the door as a proof of concept to see how it will look then I will go back to the case and finish it off!
