Help me ASAP: trolled for nearly $2000

Well here is my story.
I live on a small farm in Pennsylvania and treasure my computers and computer games. I had purchased a fairly loaded HP ZD7000 notebook, but soon wanted more power. Turns out the modem on the laptop went bad and I was sent a brand new, even faster notebook. This was left in the box , never opened. As a hardforum poster, I decided to give the forsale/trade area a try. Before long a user, customerid666 sent me a pm saying he would trade his A64 FX53 system (x800 pro, 1 gig corsair - the works) for my new laptop. We arranged to crosship on a day nearly a month ago, via US Postal Service Priority Mail (insured for $2000). The tracking number he gave me was invalid. He claimed the postal service lost his computer. So he said he would send paypal payment for $1850. He never did. Then he said he got the computer back and was sending out. He still claims it was sent, however it has been two weeks since that claim. Phone contact was made many times beforehand, and he has nothing but good heatware. However lately I have not been able to make phone contact, but have made email contact. He says he is sending a check for $2000 and he sent it wedensday. I think he is just buying time. I have called his local sherrif's and police departments. They say i have to start with my local police. Just looking for feedback/giving a warning to the rest of you.

If he does not come through, make a friendly call to his local police dept, keep all his e-mails, and keep a bookmark on this thread to show off. You can also call your local post office, as this is a form of mail fraud. They will surely investigate this.

edit: Even stranger that the tracking number for the $$ he supposedly sent USPS is a UPS tracking number to him. If he is a troll, he's messed with the wrong person....

ive been doin some research on customerid666. hes definately a troll. if your dealin w/ him, try to back out ASAP. ive talked to a few ppl whove dealt w/ customerid666 whove been trolled by him. not too pretty. o, and by coincidense, the ppl who were trolled had the same stories. sent via USPS, package 'lost' (so says customerid666), and then ur trolled.

3) Said he sent it again...Nothing Came
4) Said it got lost in the mail again and he will be going through Houston and stop by my house
5) Gave him my address....never responded within the time he said he would stop by....
6) Various Emails exchanged....somehow I managed to pump $100 back....then more emails...I would say 10 emails exchanged to just get the 100$ Back...finally after another 10 emails...Managed to get another 50$...now I just need the rest of $65. Ill update you all if anything occurs...

But guys....with a troll thread on anandtech...and over 3 people being trolled in this thread....we have a lot of power......
1) I live in Texas, so I can stop by, and probably have more power and support from local law enforment
2) 1000$+ Rip off is considered a felony I believe and other states that are not in the state you are in can go after him.

Like I said, Ill keep you updated if i get anything back or something....and if your reading this Customerid666....just give me my money back and be done with it.

Alright, Customerid666 updated me saying that he sent a money order to pay for the remaining 65$, he sent me a picture of the delivery confirmation receipt, and a picture of the money order receipt. So it looks like things could work out. He also said he may stop by houston and deliver the card in person and the deal may still be able to work out.

Now this is odd. I sent this troll a DVD Burner (standalone video one) with USPS tracking. It said it arrived today in Atlanta GA..... I mailed it to TX.... strange... now I don't know what happened to the burner and of course he never sent me the $$.

If the check doesn't clear you can wait 30 days after you mailed the laptop and then file a claim at the post office. Save the receipt and insurance stub as well as the first class/priority/express stub (with tracking number).

I am not a lawyer, BUT I don't think local police can do jack for you.

HOWEVER, the FBI might be able to do something - the US Postal Service was used as a tool for perpertrating fraud. Federal offense.

The FBI aren't as unapproachable as you might think, and they do more than just fail to track domestic terrorists (McVae, Bundy, etc). Unlike many of the cops you'll find, FBI agents are generally college educated, and often have law degree, so have a deeper understanding of what your rights might be ... since you know where the dipshit who is passing bad checks lives, call the FBI in the nearest town. If nothing else, they can suggest who else you should talk to (they will probably push you off to some fair trading group), but it is worth a try.

If nothing else if having cops knock at your door does nothing for you have a couple of FBI agent bang on the door might have more of an impact.

As I said, might do nothing, but it is worth a try. Just make sure your nose is clean, and you have a clear papertrail of your dealings with the guy (and his family).

BTW - Yes, I have called the FBI desk before. Missing persons - my cousin, backpacking around the USA, last known location New Orleans - turned up 1 week later quite alive in Chicago :). They couldn't do anything for me then, but suggested where I might check before filing a report.

Token_User is correct, this is mail fraud and usually falls under the jurisdiction of the FBI. A very similar thing happened to me on Ebay in 1997 and eventually the fellow who was defrauding people went to prison in Florida (of course he had defrauded folks out of something like 250k total), but in any event his local police along with the FBI found him after about 2 months and prosecuted him on behalf of 6 major fruad victims. We all got between 50-80% of our money back (those of us who didn't use a credit card and had CC protection), so it the end it was an expensive lesson, but the guy got his.

So yes, I suggest calling your local FBI office. Of course document everything.

It's almost like it making 100% fact you won't get prosecuted for a crime like
this if you live in another state. What is it? Does it cost to much to follow up? or does it take too long to investigate? If all the accusations are true (which I don't take sides on) then why hasn't at least one person been successful in getting him served with a summons. Looks like he's walked with $2000 the highest thus far and no worry of criminal prosecution. I had something similar happen to me for $800 and I wasn't successful in getting the guy because I give up and chalked it up to a bad experience....

But everything aside: If there's a laundry list of people that have been trolled. Why hasn't (1) person been sucessful in getting the law involved?
