Do you have SP2 RC2? It depends because if you have SP1, you'll have to shut the firewall off completly. If your behind a network and a router, why do you need a Windows firewall?

I'm actually behind a network and a router. I heard I will have more security with a firewall and the windows one was a very basic easy to use firewall. So do I go to windows update for SP2 RC2 because I usually download all the updates except for that dumb journal viewer.

Well, if you don't want SP2 RC2 and would rather wait to the end of the month, take down the Windows XP firewall. It's easy to hack, especially the one used in SP1. SP2 is much better. But I think the router will be just fine by itself. In SP2 RC2, you can allow certain programs and ports to be opened and go through.
It would be better to go with SP2, RC2. But, you have to uninstall it in order to update to the final version.
