Windows Update v5 cant update

I reinstalled WinXPSP1 and I went to the Windows Update and it updated the update software and then said it had to update the BITS 2.0 and WinHTTP 5.1.
However when I try to install the update fails and doesnt seem to work.

and tried to follow the instructions for the resolution doesnt work. The 2nd time i try to install still fails.

I looked up on the microsoft site and found the same update from the MS dl center:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?kbid=842773

but this installer didnt work because it said it couldnt copy the branches.inf file.

Did you try and download the standalone installer instead of using windowsupdate?

when your using a bad key, the update site will display that you are using an invalid copy of windows. he's having a different problem.

Windows update v5 did work for me before I reinstalled and I tried to install an update and It worked.

It was only after reinstall that it stopped working.
