In Windows XP, is there a way to remove the inactive network icons from the system tray? I know how to make it go away when it's connected to something but what about when it's disconnected?

yeah, disabling it is not really a convenient way to solve the problem. I have an internal wireless card as well as an onboard nic. I use both of them back and forth. is there possibly a registry key that I can edit?

Sorry, I accidently posted under stumpy's account...:
Sure, you can right-click on the connection (in Network Connections) and disable the connection...
Of course, that's not convenient if you are just using that connection on and off, as you will keep having to reenabling the connection. But that's the solution if you have two network connections/devices on your computer and are sick of that stupid icon in the tray.

OK, I found a solution. I removed HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{7007ACCF-3202-11D1-AAD2-00805FC1270E}. Only side effect is that I loose the icon when it's connected as well. Not a big deal to me since I turn that off anyway. I backed up the key before I deleted it incase I ever want to go back.

Wouldn't an easier sollution have been to just hide the icon using the icon hiding feature built into XP? You can any systray icon to "Always Hide"

what's the point of hiding one icon only to have it replaced by another icon that expands the system tray? If I was trying to get rid of multiple icons this world be a viable solution. But thanks for the suggestion.

Try double clicking on the icon and select properties
Make sure "Show icon in notification area when connected" is not checked.
Hope that helps...
